30% of registered voters in West Virginia voted in the primary

CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) – As all counties report, the West Virginia Department of State Reports Voter turnout in Tuesday’s primary election was just 30.32%.

Many significant statewide elections were up for grabs, including U.S. Senate and West Virginia governor.

Incumbent Gov. Jim Justice (R) will face Wheeling Mayor Glenn Elliott (D) for Manchin’s U.S. Senate seat.

Attorney General Patrick Morrisey won the Republican nomination for governor of West Virginia. He will face Huntington Mayor Steve Williams (D) and Mountain Party candidate Chase Linko-Looper.

Here’s how many registered voters cast ballots in Tuesday’s primary

Grant County had the highest percentage of voters at 43.93%. The Secretary of State’s website says 3,296 ballots were cast, compared to 7,502 voters.

More than half of Grant County’s Republican voters elected Morrisey for governor and Justice for the U.S. Senate. Democrats voted for Elliott with 45.56% of the vote.

Also in the Eastern Panhandle, Berkeley County recorded 16,323 ballots cast compared to 91,529 registered voters, for a voter turnout of 17.83%, the lowest in the state.

For U.S. Senator, 46.63% of Republican voters in Berkeley County voted for Alex Mooney, compared to 36.33% for Justice. On the Democratic side, it was a close race, with Elliott narrowly winning the nomination over Zachary Shrewsbury 39.57% to 39.23%. 56.09% of Republican voters in Berkeley County voted for Morrisey.

Kanawha County — the state’s most populous county — was in the bottom half of voter turnout at 29.43%. Of 118,371 registered voters, 34,839 ballots were cast.

In Cabell, 30.11% of registered voters voted, while in Monongalia it was 28.09%. Turnout in Ohio County was fourth at 40.10% and in Fayette it was 28.15%.

Morrisey won 34 of West Virginia’s 55 counties, with Miller winning 11 and Capito winning 10.

While Morrisey won overall, Miller and Capito won the western part of the state, with Miller capturing the westernmost counties of Boone, Cabell, Lincoln, Logan, Mason, McDowell, Mingo and Wayne, according to the state department.

Capito won West Virginia’s most populous county: Kanawha County. He also captured Harrison, Jackson, Lewis, Marion, Putnam, Randolph, Roane, Upshur and Wyoming counties.
