Well Played: GOP Congressman Shoots Down Chinese Spy Balloon in Funny New Campaign Ad

As I’ve mentioned many times in the past, I’ve followed elections since the Carter years the way many people follow sports balls. In doing so, I have become something of a critic of election campaign advertising. Some campaigns are well suited to producing print, television and now video web ads, others are not. Ronald Reagan’s 1984 “Morning in America” ad may well have contributed to his landslide re-election in 49 states. On the other end of the spectrum are Kamala Harris’ shocking “Men for Kamala Harris” ads.

On Wednesday, Republican Congressman Mike Flood of the great state of Nebraska released a current ad showing him using what appears to be a “monster” revolver to shoot a Chinese spy balloon out of the sky. Colorful, concise, to the point.

Rep. Mike Flood, R-Neb.is running for a second full term in the House of Representatives after first winning a special election in 2022 to replace impeached Rep. Jeff Fortenberry.

The 30 second video clip emphasizes Flood’s record as a China hawk using comments from the congressman himself, while also emphasizing the imminent threat of China with a Chinese flag-covered balloon floating across the screen.

“China is our enemy. Plain and simple. The Chinese Communist Party is hacking our computers, buying up land near military bases and spying on our armed forces, even here in Nebraska,” Flood says in the ad.

“That’s why I’m fighting to keep Chinese technology off our cell towers, stop China from buying farmland in Nebraska, and protect Americans from Chinese espionage and cyberattacks.”

While this won’t go down in the annals of the Greatest Political Ads In History (if there isn’t such a group, then there should be), it’s still fun. It shows Flood talking about China and issues that will affect Nebraskans – Chinese purchases of farmland, land near military bases, Chinese spy balloons allowed to fly casually throughout the United States. Then he pulls out his immense stainless steel revolver and calmly lets a caricature of a Chinese spy balloon rise from the sky. It’s colorful, concise and fun. And I have to say, a guy who can handle a high-caliber revolver would have my vote, especially when you compare him to the unfortunate Tim Walz in a strangely brand-new vest and cap trying to figure out how to load a shotgun owned for some time.

Of course, debates, ads and all the back and forth of the political season are compelling.

Flood represents Nebraska’s first congressional district, which snakes like an inverted comma in southeastern Nebraska around the western suburbs of Omaha and includes the state capital, Lincoln. He is probably a secure bet for re-election. He is running for his first full term after winning a special election by five points over Democrat Patty Brooks. Rep. Flood will face Democrat Carol Blood this year. He now has the advantage of incumbency and is expected to prevail on November 5th. But he’s clearly not resting on his laurels. This is a clever move. One should never take these things for granted.

Here is the ad:

I have never and never will live in Nebraska – but if I did, Mike Flood and his monster sixgun would have my vote.
