In a moment of cosmic agreement for people who believe that the Disney ride is right and that it is indeed a diminutive world, would-be Trump assassin Ryan Routh has chosen none other than Aileen Cannon to be the judge for his case.
Cannon, a Trump appointee, famously criticized and later dismissed special prosecutor Jack Smith’s Mar-a-Lago documents case against the former president. In return, Trump praised her skills as a judge. Both facts are now being used by Routh to persuade Cannon to do so apologizes from his case.
Routh’s lawyers said the “unprecedented circumstances” could create an appearance of partiality among the public.
“Mr. Trump is the current Republican nominee for President in next month’s election. During the campaign, he has repeatedly praised Your Honor for her decisions in his case,” Routh’s lawyers wrote the movement.
“As the alleged victim here, he also has a significant interest in the outcome of this case. Should he become President in the future, he would have the authority to appoint Your Honor to a federal judgeship on a higher court if a vacancy became available,” they continued.
The request seems far-fetched since Cannon was randomly assigned and federal judges rarely resign unless there is a clear conflict.
While Cannon has drawn criticism for her handling of the Mar-a-Lago documents case, motions to dismiss often fail without concrete evidence of bias, making it unlikely that she will be removed from the Routh case.
This appears to be more of a strategic legal move than a legitimate denial effort.
“By repeatedly and publicly praising this Court by name for its rulings in his case, Mr. Trump has arguably reinforced the impression that the Court is biased in his favor,” Routh’s lawyers wrote in the motion. Interestingly, it is also noted that the prosecutors have accepted the application for consideration.
Routh faces multiple charges, including attempted assassination of a presidential candidate, assault on a federal officer and firearms-related offenses. The indictment also includes previous charges of illegal firearm possession and possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number.
According to authorities, a Secret Service agent shot Routh after spotting a gun barrel through a fence near a golf course where Trump was playing. Although Routh did not return fire, sheriff’s deputies arrested him shortly afterwards in a nearby county.

Routh himself wrote a letter confirming that his plan was an assassination attempt on Trump.
“This was an assassination attempt on Donald Trump, but I failed you,” he wrote in the letter, which is now being considered as evidence at his upcoming trial. “I did my best and gave all the courage I could muster. Now it’s up to you to complete the job, and I will offer $150,000 to whoever can complete the job.”
