CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) – It was the closest election in West Virginia two years ago and the race faces a closely contested rematch in 2024.

The fight centers on House District 56, which is in Kanawha County. The incumbent is Del. Kayla Young (D), who won the seat in 2022.

Her opponent is former Republican Rep. Andrew Anderson, who lost the seat by just 58 votes this year.

Both candidates support the child care law recently passed in the special session and agree more needs to be done.

However, they disagree on the approved 2% income tax. Anderson voted yes, believing it would lend a hand the economy. Young voted no, fearing cuts to human services.

“And [the Finance Chair] couldn’t tell me exactly where. This is where all of our child welfare programs come from. We know we have a care crisis in West Virginia. The child care center also lives there. SNAP lives there. “Everything we do to help people lives in them, and I don’t feel comfortable taking money from them,” Del said. Kayla Young, (D) Kanawha.

“Any chance, even if it’s a petite amount of money. $46 million, or the 2%, is not a petite amount of money for working families. “Anytime we have a chance to put money back in people’s pockets, even if it’s just a tank of gas or gas every paycheck, or a shopping cart full of groceries every paycheck, I’m going to be for it,” the former said Del. Andrew Anderson (R).

Both candidates will be our guests on “Inside West Virginia Politics” this weekend. The show airs on WOWK-TV on Saturday at 2:30 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 5:00 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.
