Let me say right off the bat that I believe Donald Trump and JD Vance’s electoral victory in New York is the longest shot. But Newt Gingrich, appearing on the Fox Business Network with Maria Bartiromo, made some astute observations about Trump’s rally at Madison Square Garden — and its attendant fallout. But I think he missed one thing.
Mr. Gingrich describes Donald Trump’s speech as “very powerful and very direct” – typical of Trump – and notes that there was a palpable excitement and, shall we say, Joy in the crowd. It was an experience worth seeing, and many of my RedState colleagues shared the story.

If they tell you that Donald Trump’s event at Madison Square Garden was a “Nazi rally,” show them that
Maria asked the former speaker:
So do you think Trump could take New York? Can he win New York?
Before I address the speaker’s response, I would like to interject that Trump’s victory in the Empire State would be one of the most earth-shattering upsets in recent political history. The last time New York cast its Electoral College vote for a Republican was Ronald Reagan’s overwhelming re-election in 1984.
Mr. Gingrich replied:
Well I think that’s a long shot, I think it depends on how tired New Yorkers are of crime, the cost of taxes and corruption. He will certainly do better in New York than he did in his first two campaigns. I think he has a chance from the outside. I don’t think so… If he wins New York, it will be a Reagan-sized landslide. But he definitely has momentum. He’s helping re-elect Republican congressmen in New York, and that’s crucial if Speaker Johnson wants to have a gigantic enough majority to push through the Trump agenda.
This much is certain; if Donald Trump and JD Vance managed to take New York against seemingly insurmountable odds – and I would like to remind readers that as of this writing, the RealClearPolitics poll average for New York has Kamala Harris He is 16.5 percent ahead of Donald Trump – That’s a surprise that would register on the Richter scale.
But as my colleague Nick Arama reminds us, there may already be some things at play that we didn’t expect:

However, Mr. Gingrich is missing one thing here. There is much more to the state of the race and Trump’s rally at Madison Square Garden than just the near-impossible odds of Trump taking New York. There’s more at stake than just helping New York Republicans lower their votes. There is a bigger picture; There is a larger message being conveyed here, and that message was threefold effective from New York.
You see, New York is not just an American city. Perhaps more than any other city on the planet, New York is an international city. It is the center of global finance. It is the economic epicenter of the planet and also a major cultural center. A major event in New York, like Trump’s rally at Madison Square Garden, attracts attention from around the world. And by staging a gigantic, boisterous and in-your-face MAGA rally at Madison Square Garden, Trump is throwing down the gauntlet not just to American Democrats but to the entire world, and the message is: “I’m coming back.” And this time I will not the same errors as the first time.
It was a powerful message. It remains a sturdy message. Furthermore, it is a winning message. And delivered so close to the election, it is a groundbreaking message.
