CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) – A little less than 63% of registered voters in West Virginia cast a ballot in the 2024 general election, a tiny decrease from 2020 turnout. according to the State Department.

According to this data, the number of registered voters has increased in every general election in West Virginia since 2008. By 2024, the number of registered voters fell by around 60,000 compared to 2020.

The percentage of ballots cast in West Virginia skyrocketed from 2016 to 2020, rising from 57.4% of registered voters to 63.2%. In 2024, there was a slight decrease compared to 2020, with 62.8% of the vote in the general election.

In the 2024 general election, they fell from just 46.14% to 73.15% in individual counties. Still, the low voter turnout in the general election is higher than the high turnout in the primaries.

The county with the highest voter turnout is Grant County with 73.15% of registered voters. Grant is followed by Preston (72.32%), Wirt (71.13%), Tucker (71.01%) and Pocahontas (68.94%).

At the other end of the scale, in McDowell County, 46.16% of registered voters cast a ballot. Mingo (48.34%), Logan (50.81%), Berkeley (52.87%) and Wyoming (55.11%) followed suit.

West Virginia’s largest counties were all in the bottom half for voter turnout. Cabell had the lowest of the three with 60.94% of the vote, Kanawha had 62.54% and Monongalia had 63.95%.

Three of West Virginia’s biggest races – president, governor and U.S. Senate – all went to Republicans, with the Associated Press calling those elections shortly after polls closed at 7:30 p.m

West Virginia was one of the first states to be nominated for now-President Donald Trump, along with other states considered protected for their parties, such as Indiana and Kentucky for Trump and Vermont for Vice President Kamala Harris.

In a key victory for Republicans, Gov. Jim Justice beat Democratic challenger and Wheeling Mayor Glenn Elliott for a U.S. Senate seat, leaving the seat to Republicans for the first time since the 1950s.

And for governor, Attorney General Patrick Morrisey defeated Democratic challenger and Huntington Mayor Steve Williams.
