Breaking news: Republicans control the US House of Representatives

With the race in AZ-6 being called for incumbent Rep. Juan Ciscomani, the Republican Party will retain control of the U.S. House of Representatives.

There are eight races left – seven in California and one in Alaska. Calling the race in Alaska is delayed due to the ranked-choice voting format, and in California, mail-in ballots are still being received until Tuesday.

In California, Republican incumbents Michelle Steel and Ken Calvert look set to retain their seats, while John Duarte and Mike Garcia face a tougher fight. There are still potential disagreements: just a few thousand votes separate Republican Scott Baugh and Democrat Dave Min in the battle to replace Rep. Katie Porter in Orange County, and fewer than a thousand votes represent incumbent Democratic Rep. Jim Costa and the Republican challenger Michael Maher.

Cole Patterson, data director for the Republican Party of California, says about 4 million ballots remain to be processed out of more than 12.5 million.

California’s results don’t have to be certified for another 30 days.
