Are Democrats finally tired of Rep. Nancy Pelosi calling the shots? A fresh report sheds some featherlight on the internal civil war that has erupted within the Democratic Party, and the California congresswoman finds herself in the middle of it. And to be clear, it’s entirely her fault.
Pelosi made waves over the summer when she led efforts to end President Joe Biden’s re-election effort, which ultimately led to the coronation of Kamala Harris. I don’t think I need to explain how that turned out. But after Donald Trump’s landslide victory, Pelosi is still talking, and some of her colleagues are almost fed up.
Speaker Emeritus of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) angered some House Democrats for speaking out publicly about what their party did wrong in 2024.
Why it matters: Pelosi must admit the minority leader in the House of Representatives Hakeem Jeffries (DN.Y.) lead the caucus, Democrats tell Axios.
- “She has to take a seat.” said a senior Democratic lawmaker.
- “Make scattershot comments “This is not only useless, it is harmful,” the lawmaker said.
“Hakeem was incredibly graceful and respectful of her, but I don’t think she’s respectful of him,” said a member of the Congressional Black Caucus.
The latest controversy was sparked by Pelosi telling the New York Times that the election might have turned out differently if Biden had dropped out earlier. Specifically, she pointed to the possibility of a condensed primary rather than anointing Harris, which ultimately happened.
Is she wrong? Not necessarily, but how do Democrats want to hear what they “should have” done from the person who screwed things up so royally that Donald Trump, the man they compare to Adolf Hitler, was re-elected? Pelosi flew too close to the sun. Believing herself to be above the will of her party’s primary voters, she staged a pliable coup against the legitimate candidate. The result was a miserable disaster.

So can other Democrats be blamed for their hubristic attitude toward what should have happened? Pelosi is 84 years aged and has promised to step aside for Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries. Instead, she took the made-up title of “Speaker Emerita” and was still in charge in the background. Its failure so miserably has turned what used to be fear and respect in the Democratic caucus into resentment.
The conclusion: Some Democrats are clearly frustrated that Pelosi is not fading into the sunset, as she promised when she lost the gavel two years ago.
- “My advice For my fellow Democrats, it’s simple: follow the leader. “Hakeem Jeffries did a great job,” Pelosi said said in 2023.
- “I understand that this is a difficult transition for her because she is not the leader, but she is not,” the Congressional Black Caucus member told us.
- “She has to understand what her new role is.
Your new role should be retired. Why exactly is she staying here? Much less are you trying to run the caucus? These are rhetorical questions.

Pelosi won’t go because her ego won’t allow it. She is sociopathic in her pursuit of power and prestige, and while the press has long praised her as a historical figure, reality tells a different story. Despite doing everything she could to overthrow the Republican Party, she ended up being the speaker who lost the gavel twice. Worse, she helped put Donald Trump into office twice.
She desperately wants to save her legacy, but ousting Biden to defeat the evil orange man was likely her last chance for redemption. It’s all downhill from here whether she wants to accept it or not, and if she doesn’t, the civil war in the Democratic Party will only get worse.
