New York politician advocates… secession? Haven’t we tried this before?

It seems like this problem keeps coming up after every election; So the losing side demands a national divorce or simply the withdrawal of certain states from the union. In the latest such example, New York State Senator Liz Krueger, a Democrat from New York City, is proposing that New York State leave the union – and join Canada – following the Republican victory in the 2024 election.

Yes, that doesn’t happen.

novel York State lawmakers have hinted at using unusual tactics to combat immigration Trump administration, including withholding federal taxes and withdrawing the United States from accession Canada.

State Sen. Liz Krueger, a prominent New York City Democrat who is also chairwoman of the state Senate Finance Committee, suggested the ideas as the state’s Democrats have just weeks to counter President-elect Donald Trump before he takes office.

Krueger believes such thinking is justified.

“It’s not unreasonable to think outside the box,” Krueger said told Politico.

If this were a television documentary, this would be the point at which the narrator would jump in: “It was unreasonable to think outside the box.” The thing about this box is that, for all its problems, it’s still a pretty good box and even better than the box in our north.

But the fun of it is why Senator Krueger wants to resign.

While turning New York into a Canadian province could mean a fairytale ending for Krueger, it is only slightly more likely that the state will withhold federal taxes. The state senator hinted at such an idea if Trump decides to send less federal funds to New York, which he has suggested if some cities don’t cooperate with federal immigration authorities.

Trump’s “border czar,” former ICE director Tom Homan, clarified Trump’s earlier threat, saying he would block federal funding to states that don’t cooperate.

“That will happen. I guarantee you that,” Homan said.

A complete block of federal funding would leave New York $85 billion in the hole. As Krueger suggested, they could offset those funds by sending less of the hundreds of billions of taxpayer money they receive.

This is not a fight Senator Kruger can win. New Yorkers will not emigrate to Canada because of illegal immigrants. Admittedly, if you look at it strategically, the Republican should support New York, especially since Senator Krueger is talking about taking Connecticut, Massachusetts and Vermont with him. Removing New York’s electoral votes would shift the presidential election to the right, and removing these states would also shift the balance in Congress.

Maybe Senator Krueger can convince California to join in?

Frankly, this is an idea that goes nowhere.

But it is clear to see the extent to which Trump deangement syndrome drives people. This New York politician is literally advocating for states to secede from the Union because Tom Homan says he will enforce the law – namely immigration laws – laws that are in the legitimate enforcement portfolio of the executive branch of the federal government since January The 20th is chaired by – you guessed it – Donald Trump.

Senator Krueger is willing to do this to protect people who are not in the country legally, costing New York State and New York City taxpayers millions of dollars.

That’s crazy.
