Among the many Cabinet and administration positions for which President-elect Donald Trump announced his picks in the month after his election, there are several that are “new.”

The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), for example, makes a lot of headlines even though it’s not technically part of the government. With Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy at the helm of the consultancy, it will also have its own lawyer, Bill McGinley.

There is also the newly formed “National Energy Council”, which will be headed by the Governor of North Dakota, Doug Burgum, appointed by the Secretary of the Interior.

And there’s an official border czar (Tom Homan) again, even though current Vice President Kamala Harris reportedly held that role in the Biden administration… before she didn’t.

Now comes a recent role: “White House AI & Crypto Czar.” On Thursday evening, Trump announced he was naming entrepreneur/investor David Sacks to the position, announcing via Truth Social:

I am pleased to announce that David O. Sacks will be the “White House AI and Crypto Czar.” In this critical role, David will lead the administration’s policy in artificial intelligence and cryptocurrency, two areas critical to the future of American competitiveness. David will focus on making America the clear global leader in both areas. It will protect free speech online and keep us away from the bias and censorship of Big Tech. He will work on a legal framework so that the crypto industry can get the clarity it has been asking for and thrive in the US. David will also lead the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology…

…David Sacks has been a highly successful entrepreneur and investor for 25 years, building and investing in some of the most well-known companies in Silicon Valley. He was the COO of PayPal’s founding days and part of the legendary “PayPal Mafia”. David then founded the enterprise software company Yammer, which was acquired by Microsoft for $1.2 billion. He then founded Craft Ventures, a venture capital firm based in San Francisco. David is co-host of the All-In Podcast, the top podcast in tech where he and his friends discuss economic, political and social topics.

David has the knowledge, business experience, intelligence and pragmatism to make AMERICA great in these two critical technologies. Congratulations, David!

Sacks, 52, hosted the Silicon Valley fundraiser for Trump in June, which raised $12 million for the campaign. He spoke at the Republican National Convention and fully supported the Trump-Vance ticket.

As Trump states in his announcement, he sees AI and crypto as crucial to the country’s competitiveness. It’s astute to hire someone with vision and expertise who can take the lead on these fronts.
