There are certain behaviors we should not tolerate from elected, appointed or hired government officials. We should not tolerate any criminal activity or bribery. And we should not tolerate petulant displays of childish annoyance.

The latest is exactly what we saw during a House Oversight Committee hearing on Tuesday, when Postmaster General Louis DeJoy threw a tantrum and covered his ears while being questioned by one Republican Committee Member.

Postmaster General Louis DeJoy covered his ears during a congressional hearing as a representative. Rich McCormick (R-Ga.) repeatedly pressed him for oversight of the Postal Service.

During a House Oversight and Accountability Committee hearing on Tuesday, McCormick told DeJoy that he wasn’t getting an “A” grade when it came to his leadership of the US Postal Service (USPS).

“You have been evaluated by the Americans and they are no longer using your service,” McCormick said.

“That’s not true,” Dejoy said as McCormick continued to talk about him. “Our office is growing.”

“They are responsible for the decline of the Postal Service and the lack of accountability,” McCormick said, while DeJoy interjected: “This Congress is responsible for causing it to fall apart. “I’m trying to fix the Postal Service.”

DeJoy told McCormick, “You’re talking to yourself,” before covering his ears.

What is this guy, 12 years venerable? I wouldn’t have put up with that from my three children. Why should we put up with this from the United States Postmaster General?

Here, take a look for yourself:

This is unbearable. If he were a toddler and wasn’t just acting like it, this would result in Mr. Bottom taking a quick trip to spank land. If he were in a criminal or civil courtroom, it wouldn’t be surprising if he ended up being convicted of contempt of court after spending a few days in the country. But this is a grown man in a position of responsibility in the United States federal government.

During my time at the company, such an act would almost certainly have resulted in someone being paid off on the spot. This is, quite frankly, what should happen to Louis DeJoy. Adults don’t behave like that, and a person high in the federal bureaucracy being interviewed by a congressional committee Really shouldn’t behave like that. It’s embarrassing. It’s a shame. And as one of the taxpayers who pays this man’s salary, that is grounds for termination for me.

What’s worse: This man runs a federal service lost $6.5 billion in fiscal 2023.

The U.S. Postal Service lost $6.5 billion in the just-ended fiscal year, denting the service’s hopes for a financial turnaround.

The Postal Service had forecast it would break even in the fiscal year that ended Sept. 30, on track to an annual profit this year and in the future. The results are particularly disappointing because the company saw revenue decline earlier this year as shippers shifted package volumes away from UPS amid the threat of strikes there.

Postmaster General Louis DeJoy blamed the loss on inflation, which drove up operating costs. This also led to an enhance in printing prices, which significantly reduced the amount of junk mail sent through the mail.

I’ve been saying for some time that there is a skills crisis in the federal government. Now we see in the case of Louis DeJoy that there is also a maturity crisis. President-elect Trump, please find us a novel U.S. Postmaster General!
