After suffering its most devastating defeat in state-of-the-art history in November, the Democratic Party’s autopsies have begun. Accordingly PoliticoSeveral focus groups held after the election left party leaders panicking and unable to find an straightforward way out.
Specifically, participants described the far-left political party as “complacent and lazy” and “no friend of the working class.” Others complained that Democrats were too tied to their radical ideas, “even when they fail.”
Democrats conducting post-mortems on their huge losses in 2024 see more cause for alarm. And the problem isn’t just Kamala Harris or Joe Biden.
In a trio of focus groups, even voters who had previously supported Democrats described the party as feeble and overly focused on diversity and elites, according to a study by the progressive group Navigator Research.
When asked to compare the Democratic Party to an animal, one participant compared the party to an ostrich because “it buries its head in the sand and is absolutely committed to its own ideas, even when they fail.” Another compared them with koalas who are “complacent and lazy when it comes to achieving the political gains we really need.” Another said Democrats are “no longer friends of the working class.”
The focus groups weren’t just filled with random Democratic voters. Instead, they were made up of a variety of people who voted for President Joe Biden in 2020 but then voted for fresh President Donald Trump in 2024. Given that these people made the difference in the election, this approach makes sense. Does it really matter what a leftist from Boulder thinks when he tries to come up with a plan to save the Democratic Party?
A Georgia man who switched his vote to Trump called out the “Democratic elites,” saying they are “obsessed” with a “far-left social progressivism” often promoted on college campuses.
“I think what the Democratic elites and their politicians believe is often very different from what the average Democratic voter is,” said a Georgia man who voted for Biden in 2020 but for Trump in 2024. “The elites that run the Democratic Party — I think they’re far too obsessed with appealing to this far-left social progressivism that’s very popular on college campuses.”
All of this is good information, but Democrats face a problem that has no straightforward solution. In a vacuum, could the party change its stance and appear more sensible? Maybe, but the Democratic Party doesn’t exist in a vacuum. To understand this, all you had to do was watch MSNBC in the days after the 2024 election.

Much of the problem began with former President Barack Obama. He ushered in a wave of racial grievances and divisions that spawned the insanely woke social progressivism that is now commonplace Heart the Democratic Party. This means it cannot be easily removed. When party leaders try to move toward the middle on things like DEI, social justice, and transgenderism to appeal to more everyday Americans, they have betrayed an increasingly militant base, and if the pro-Hamas crazies have taught us anything, it is the Democratic base will burn everything down out of pure spite.
So what are the Democrats doing? I have no idea. If House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, who still mutters about “extreme MAGA Republicans,” is any indication, they will continue to double their votes. The rumors about a third presidential candidacy by Kamala Harris show no signs of a change. This is what happens when you give in to crazy leftist ideology for short-term political reasons. It’s a two-way street and the Democrats are stuck.
