CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) – With the fresh year comes fresh leadership. U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (I-WV) is ending more than 40 years of public service.

As Manchin’s term ends this month and West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice prepares to take over as senator, the outgoing lawmaker has some advice.

“You have to build relationships. You have to build trust within those relationships and you have to work with everyone,” Manchin said. “So I was able to be successful, I think, because no one saw me as a threat. I have never fought against an environment that calls someone Republican or Democrat. I can’t do anything for my state or the people. “I’ll work for you if you don’t understand that I also want to help you and your state.”

Manchin went on to say he never felt pressured to make decisions as a senator because he didn’t try to change his personality. The judge will fill Manchin’s seat after Jan. 13, when his term as governor ends.
