Mike Waltz, Trump’s national security advisor, said that the United States and Russia had negotiated an exchange to ensure Fogel’s release. He didn’t say what the US side of the bargain brought with him. Earlier negotiations have occasionally involved mutual publications by the United States or its allies.
Waltz described the development as “a sign that we move in the right direction to end brutal and terrible war in Ukraine”. Trump, a Republican, promised to find a way to end the conflict.
