Washington (AP)-The Senate said goodbye hours before a state closure, an expenditure law led by Republicans, the piercing democratic opposition to the measure and sent to President Donald Trump to be signed in the law.
The essentially party-line vote, 54-46, did not give the entire picture of the gnawing democratic fear of how they can confront the Trump administration, since the Department of Government Efficiency is broken down by federal workers and processes of operations. The Democrats fought over whether they should fight a closure and fumbled that the Republicans created a measure that included little from their input, linking health care, housing construction and other priorities.
In the end, enough of the democratic senators decided that the government was even worse, and supported Chuck Schumer’s strategy to report the draft law.
“A shutdown enables Doge to move in overdrive,” said Schumer. “Donald Trump and Elon Musk would be free to destroy essential state services faster.”
The Democrats were confronted with two painful options: Allow to enable a legislative template that believe that it gives President Donald Trump a great discretion with regard to spending decisions or no and lets the financing expire. Some Democrats also argued that the Republicans would blame for a shutdown because they controlled all the levers of power in the congress and in the White House.
“If you refuse to present an offer that contains democratic contributions and do not receive democratic voices, then the Republicans are,” said Senator Patty Murray, the Senate’s Senate Committee.
In contrast, Schumer took up an unexpected nod of the support – from Trump himself, who only prepared himself a day earlier to accuse Democrats for any shutdown.

The expenses of invoices are usually equipped with specific financing guidelines for critical programs, but hundreds of these guidelines fall back as part of the continued decision. The administration therefore has more scope to decide where the money is going.
In a democratic memo, for example, said the government’s legislation would enable money to prevent money from fighting fentanyl and instead using it on mass postponement initiatives.
Several changes to the legislation failed, but one to remove the financing for Doge from a Republican, Senator Lisa Murkowski from Alaska.
The expenditure calculation before the Senate is separated from the GOP efforts to extend the tax cuts for people who were passed in Trump’s first term and partially pay them with spending cuts elsewhere in the government.
This second package will be developed in the coming months, but was clearly part of the political calculation.
“You see a two-2 punch, a very bad CR, then a reconciliation calculation that comes down, which will be the last kick in the teeth for the American people,” said Senator Bernie Sanders, I-VT.

The senators unanimously approved a separate law to determine an unexpected provision in the package according to which the District of Columbia would return to the budget of 2024, a reduction of around 1.1 billion US dollars, although the district collects most of its own money. This calculation that is now in -house would enable expenses to 2025 levels.
