Concord, NH (AP) -A voter in Milford, New Hampshire, missed the approval of the city’s 19 million dollar business budget, chose a trustee of the cemetery and the purchase of a recent dump truck. In Durham, an 18-year-old student did not receive a say in who should serve in the school authority or whether $ 125,000 should be subject to the replacement of artificial lawns on sports fields.
Thanks to a recent state law according to which the US citizenship had caused the US citizenship to register for voting, it was also unable to take part in the recent city elections. Their experiences that were told by the city’s employees could prove to be instructive for the rest of the country, since the law for the authorization of the Safeguard American Voter Felibility promoted in congress, and more than a dozen states take into account similar laws.
“Anything that tried to downplay everything told us New Hampshire exactly what would happen at the Save Act at the national level,” said Greta Bedkowic, a former political advisor for Senate Democrats who is now at the Center for American progress.
Married women with changed names face additional hurdles
Voting-Rights groups are particularly concerned that married women who have changed their names occur when trying to register, as their birth certificates list their girls names.
This is exactly what Brooke Yonge happened, a 45-year-old hairdresser who appeared in her polling station in Derry last week to show her support for public education.
It was initially dismissed because she had no proof of citizenship. When she returned with her birth certificate, this was still not sufficient, since the name in the document did not match which on her driver’s license. At home she got her marriage license to prove that she had changed her name.
“Third trip around the sun and here we are,” said Yonge, who, despite the anger, appropriately described the registration requirements. “If I did a little research, I would probably have known what I needed.”
New Hampshire is one of the 20 countries that enable voters to register on the day of an election. According to the New Hampshire campaign for voting rights, at least 56 people who tried to register the day of the city elections on March 11 nationwide, although it is not known how many of them later completed the process.
The city clerk from Derry, Tina Guilford, wonders how it will work during a general election in November if the turnout is much higher.
“It is only heartbreaking for me to see how people turn around and think:” I hope they will come back, “she said.
At least one person who tried to register in Milford on Tuesday did not return, said Joan Dargie, the city clerk. Also an older woman who registered in the town hall before the election. The first of the woman of the woman was in Florida in the 1970s and this license was long gone, said Dargie.
“Sometimes people say:” I didn’t save any documents for it. I wanted to forget all of this, “said Dargie.” It is not right women. “
What happens at the national level?
The US house adopted laws last year to request the proof of citizenship for the registration of voters, but the Senate stalled in the Senate in the democratic opposition. Since the Republicans now have full control over the congress, the house is expected to resume again soon.
Before the 2024 elections, Donald Trump mistakenly claimed that citizens could not vote in sufficiently immense numbers to influence the result. In fact, research and reviews of state cases have shown that the coordination of non -citizens rarely and typically are more of a mistake than an intentional effort to undermine an election.
The Republicans argue that even a tiny number of non -state members undermine the public’s trust.
The recent law of New Hampshire has also had broad support. About 8 out of 10 New Hampshire voters In the 2024 elections, people favored that people in their state show a passport, birth certificate or other evidence of US citizenship if they register to choose, such as AP VoiceCast, including about 6 out of 10, which were sturdy for it. The extensive majority of Trump voters supported the requirement, but also more than half of the voters for democratic vice presidents Kamala Harris in the race against the Republican Trump.
During the last elections of the town hall, Michael Appleton had to return home to maintain his birth certificate and to change the name before he could register and vote. Nevertheless, he criticized the recent law.
“At that moment it is personally impractical for me, but I don’t think it’s an inappropriate thing to ask,” he said.
The Republican representative of the state of Bob Lynn, who sponsored the law of New Hampshire, does not believe that there is widespread voter fraud in the state. He also does not believe that the recent citizenship requirements are excessively stressful.
“It seems to me that the coordination is quite important and it is not inappropriate to tell people, see, they have to give a little foresight for what they need to choose,” said Lynn, a former top judge of the Hampshire Supreme Court.
Other states also take measures
New Hampshire is one of eight countries with laws that require a documentary proof of citizenship to register for the vote, and similar laws are pending in 17 states, according to the national legislative conference.
Experience was temporarily affected in some states that have issued proof of the national.
In Arizona, a recently published state audit found that problems with the way data were treated had influenced the persecution and review of citizenship. After the officials had identified around 200,000 voters, which were assumed that they had granted citizenship, but not.
Proof of citizenship needs took place in Kansas for three years before it was canceled by legal challenges. The state’s own expert estimated that almost all around 30,000 people who prevent registration to vote in the period were US citizens who were claimed.
In Texas, where the Republicans control both houses of the legislator, the legislator has introduced a draft law that would in a way expand the proposed law on Save Federal Save. It would require proof of citizenship to register voters and force state and local election officers to check the citizenship status of all already registered citizenship.
If the citizenship cannot be checked, this person would be notified and may only vote in the congress elections.
Further changes in New Hampshire
Even if the law of New Hampshir is offset by legal challenges, the legislators of the state consider further changes.
Last week, the State House granted a preliminary approval for a legislative template that would create vouchers in order to cover the costs for needy voters for obtaining a birth certificate, although the opponents said that the voters ask for declaring themselves needy. It would also instruct the Foreign Minister to “make reasonable efforts” to check citizenship if someone cannot submit any documents. Critics found that the office only has access to birth certificates in New Hampshire.
“If you adopt a legislative template, make sure that you withstand legal disputes and make sure that it offers real solutions. This legislation does not cause either,” Connie Lane told the democratic MP.
In Durham, where the coordination in the city’s high school takes place, the students who have enrolled in Civics courses traditionally observe the process. You received an additional lesson during the last elections of the town hall. According to Rachel Deane, the city clerk, a student who was aged enough to choose it had to be registered, but not the documents to prove citizenship.
“The superiors of the checklist of voters are wonderful in Durham, and they have passed the pupil through the process and encouraged them to come back,” she said.
Deane said she believed that the student had never returned.
