At the urging of the Foreign Minister, West Virginia could tighten the laws of acceptable forms of photo identification that can be used on polling stations.
The delegates’ house said goodbye to a measure sponsored by Republicans, House bill 3016On Friday, a photo ID-in usually a driver’s license, a passport or an identification card must be required. It would remove several current options that are accepted at polling stations that can validate identity, including a Medicaid card and a supply invoice.
“What this bill wants to prevent is voter fraud of any kind if it is able,” said Del. “We heard that,” he said.
The DEL. Erica Moore, R-Roane, sponsored measure was the house with A vote from 84-8. It is now going to the Senate to take this into account.
It is one of Several GOP invoices for GOP-BACKED elections This session, some of Foreign Minister Kris Warner, who say the Republicans, are to protect the election integrity. House Democrats say that conspiracy theories have taken the measures that could prevent people from accessing the surveys.
West Virginia has Abysmal turnout. Opponents of this legislation fear that it will make it tough, especially for older West Virgin and those who do not drive access to the Internet or have no access to coordinate in the state.
“There is no evidence that a prerequisite for the photo voter ID would tackle any problem. Like the choice of non-citizen, the voter-intensive practically does not exist” said in an explanation.
Del. Mike Pushkin, D-Kanawha, emphasized that the state already has laws with voters ID.
“We had no problems,” he said. “I think this should be dismissed by some of our older members of our society, and whatever? We prevent a problem that does not take place.”
Bill Supporters said that West Virginia voters will continue to have opportunities to demonstrate identification on the election days, including a voter registration card with a photo that can be obtained free of charge from an office of a district clerk. A resident must request this option.
“This draft law makes it clear that if you apply for a voter ID from the Foreign Minister, this is free of charge,” said Akers.
Del. Gary Howell, R-Mineral, added: “There is no excuse that there is no photo voter registration card. This is a photo ID that can be used for coordination and ensures our choice.”
The measure enables voters aged 65 and over to employ an expired ID, including an expired driver’s license, as long as it was valid on her 65th birthday. In addition, surveying can be correct to a voter that the election consultant has known for at least six months without presenting a valid ID.
Del. Evan Hansen, D-Monongalia, said that the law would lead to less legal West Virginians personally voting personally on election day or during the early personal coordination.
“Now the Republican Supermajority is turning … your attention to personal coordination,” he said. “Fewer voices are submitted.”
“This is a number of bills that limit access to the vote in West Virginians,” continued Hansen. “We should say goodbye to invoices that actually expand people’s right to the ballot and do not restrict them.”
Akers said that if people cannot access a photo ID, they can vote with a absent ballot without a photo ID.
“The eligibility is not minimized at all,” he said.
The house has already passed House bill 2117What people would forbid to send or distribute more than 10 requests to people to people who have not asked about them, including people who can hand over the applications in nursing homes.
It would also change how the state deals with absent ballot, including the determination of a period from 7:30 p.m. on the election day so that no ballot papers are preserved.
