The Trump government asks the congress to eliminate the financing for the Head Start, a step that would reduce early education for more than half a million of children in need and childcare for their families.
The proposal is installed in a 64-page budget document for internal designs received by the Associated Press, which strives for profound cuts in the Department of Health and Human Services, which supervises the lead. It is still in a very preliminary phase, as the White House is preparing to send the congress to its budget application for the 2026 financial year.
It is not clear whether the proposed cuts are accepted by the legislator. While the congress often ignores the budget request of a president, the proposed removal of the head start underlines the priorities of the administration as President Donald Trump wants to revise education in the United States.
“The budget does not finance a lead,” said the draft. It is said to eliminate the program with the “goals of the Trump administration agreed to return control over education to the states and to increase the control of the parents”.
“The Federal Government should not be in the business of commissioning a curriculum, locations and performance standards for a form of education,” says the document.
Spokesman for health and human services did not respond to a request for comments.
Since taking office in January, the Trump government has sworn to reduce the Ministry of Education, banned initiatives in the schools of diversity initiatives and have frozen the financing at several elite universities to force changes to universities, of which republicans say they are breeding sites of liberalism and anti -Semitism.
The Head Start program had already been met this year by layoffs and finance delays as well as this winter, which were closed from their federal accounts shortly before school providers. The private and public schools that run the lead of the classrooms are deeply dependent on federal money, and this year’s financing problems have temporarily concluded.
These closures have completed childcare for hundreds of thousands of families with low incomes, for which a day without work is often without payment.
The National Head Start Association said that the government’s proposal was “deeply alerted” to end the six decades -old program.
“It reflects a sale in our future,” said Yasmina Vinci, Executive Director of the NHSA, in an explanation on Thursday. “The elimination of the financing for the lead would be catastrophic. It would be a direct attack on the endangered children of our nation, their well -being and their families.”
Head Start is more than just a preschool program, said Vinci. It offers meals and health demonstrations and helps the field for children who could otherwise fall back before the start of the kindergarten. Many Head start -up children are in care or homeless.
A wear and tear for financing for the lead since January has meant that some preschoolers have been closed. From 1 January to Tuesday, the federal government distributed $ 1.6 billion for the Head Start compared to $ 2.55 billion in the same period of the previous year, according to Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash, which analyzes a federal database. Murray said the Trump government “slowly changed” the financing acquired by the congress.
“This administration is of the opinion that we cannot afford to help families to get preschool or to receive basic health services to children, but we can afford trillion dollars more tax breaks for billionaires,” said Murray at the beginning of this week. “It is offensive and just wrong, and let me be clear: Democrats do not let such a proposal go everywhere in the congress.”
“But that doesn’t mean that Head Start and so many other programs are not under great threat – because Trump has proven that he will ignore our laws and do everything to break these programs himself,” said Murray.
Head Start works in all 50 states. Parents who would otherwise not afford childcare rely on it when they work or go to school. Followers say that the importance of the advantage of the economy and the endangered children equally underlines.
While Head Start since its foundation under President Lyndon B. Johnson’s war against poverty, some Republicans emphasized their defects and criticized the efforts to boost the financing. And Project 2025, the political blueprint created by the conservative Heritage Foundation, called for the overall removal of the head.
