Washington (Nexstar) – The legislator of the house passed a legislative template on Thursday to eliminate the federal protection for a fish that has become a flashpoint in the debate about the California water resources.
The approximately three inches long, which swims in the Bay Delta of San Francisco Bay-Delta, has divided members of the congress.
“They transform a small fish into a very large scapegoat,” said Rep. Jared Huffman (D-Calif.).
“The youngest weapon to take water away from the farmers,” said Rep. Doug Lamalfa (R-Calif.).
The California Republican Doug Lamalfa and the Democrat Jared Huffman exchanged the efforts of the Republicans on Thursday to eliminate the status of the endangered species for the fish.
“Only about 1% of the population are left. Like the number of environmentalists in the Republican Party,” said Huffman.
“It seems that we are in parallel universes when I start talking about the defense of agriculture,” said Lamalfa.
Lamalfa stated the advance of taking the fish from the list of endangered species after it was added under the bidden administration last summer. The name is intended to assist restore the fish by ensuring that enough fresh water is available.
The house voted on Thursday around 216-195 for the cancellation.
Lamalfa says he does not believe that the list is justified and believes that it will lead less water for farmers in the Central Valley and, as a result, less harvest.
“And that is denied the whole country,” said Lamalfa.
According to Huffman, it is more than any other fish, but an entire water supply to which millions rely on to which millions rely on.
“It’s about protecting the ecological health of the entire Bay Delta,” said Huffman. “His health underpins millions of drinking water.”
According to Huffman, the voice of the house is a distraction.
“The real threats to rural America, water security and the livelihood of American farmers are trade wars,” said Huffman.
The resolution now goes to the Senate.
