Are they finally tired of being nice? Senate Republicans say they will block Biden’s nominations over Trump’s lawfare

Over the past year, Americans have watched as Donald Trump brought four charges against himself in four pro-Democracy districts, bringing his total to 91 felony charges. It’s a blatant display of a Justice Department unlike any this country has ever seen. With President Joe Biden looking increasingly faint and mentally impaired, Democrats know they’re in trouble come November, and the “lawfare” strategy seemed to be their only option to cement their hold on power. But it seems Senate Republicans have had enough and are tired of playing nice.

On Thursday, a Group of GOP senators led by Senator JD Vance, including Senators Mike Lee (R-OH), Bill Hagerty (R-TN), Roger Marshall (R-KS), Tommy Tuberville (R-AL), and Eric Schmitt (R-MO), announced that they would put several of President Biden’s nominees on hold in response to the ongoing “radical lawfare” against Donald Trump. In addition to various judicial nominees, the nominations for Assistant Secretary of the Treasury and General Counsel for the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) are also pending.

The Senators’ announcement stated that the candidates in question would apply to those who supported “lawfare or censorship” of Trump, “thought prosecution of Trump was appropriate” or acknowledged Trump’s guilt. The nominees include Rep. Barbara Lee (D-CA) to represent the U.S. in the UN General Assembly, Surgeon General Vivek Murthy to represent the U.S. on the board of the World Health Organization, and former Rep. Charlie Crist (D-FL) to represent the U.S. on the council of the International Civil Aviation Organization. While these nominations are relatively minor, they force Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) to employ valuable Senate floor time on things like judicial nominations, leaving the others behind or not confirmed at all. The group says this delay will continue until the election.

In a massive bout of self-forgetfulness, many leftists are now worried that if Trump is re-elected, he will seek revenge and subject them to the same treatment they have fully accepted from him. Yet in a recent interview with Fox News Channel’s “Fox & Friends,” Trump declared, “My revenge will be success.” But would a little revenge, served up nice and chilly to Democrats and others who have been in cahoots with them, really be so bad?

John Yoo is a Professor of Law at UC Berkeley and member of the George W. Bush’s administration. In a recent essay in the National Review, he argued for such a dose of karma for the Democrats. Yoo states the obvious: that the Democrats’ perversion of the American legal system has done great damage to the office of the president. He names some Examples of how Republicans could be justified in and turn the tables on the Democrats.

“For example, a prosecutor in upstate New York could charge former President Barack Obama with murder for ordering a drone strike on al-Qaeda leaders, including an American from Buffalo. A prosecutor in California could charge George W. Bush with the kidnapping of a San Francisco resident who was captured by American forces while fighting for the Taliban.”

Yoo argues that some tit-for-tat approach would strengthen executive independence, but also believes Republicans can “restore the rule of law” by pursuing the idea that “like cases should be treated alike.” Yoo adds, “We have to rely on Republicans to threaten to escalate banana republic policies to prevent us from actually becoming a banana republic.”

Even if Donald Trump recently told Sean Hannity of Fox News Channel: “This (political persecution) has to stop, otherwise we won’t have a country anymore,” could the actions of the Republicans in the Senate finally galvanize other Republicans and make them realize that being nice won’t get them anywhere? Let’s hope there will be more welcome opportunities for Republicans to stand up and say they’re furious and won’t put up with this anymore.
