Washington (Nexstar) – A group of legislators on the Capitol Hill on Wednesday started a new psychiatric caucus mental health.

According to the National Institute of Psychical Health, more than every fifth American fights with a mental illness.

It is something that these legislators have seen first -hand.

“For me it was my sister. When I grew up, I watched her struggle with depression and suicide thoughts,” Rep. Andrea Salinas (D-OR).

“Schizophrenia was diagnosed with my son 31 years ago,” said Rep. Don Beyer (D-VA.).

“My stepmother-sie had mental illness,” said Rep. Don Bacon (R-Neb.).

The group is now starting a psychological caucus for mental health, which is led by the congress member of the co-chair in Oregon, Andrea Salinas.

“To raise awareness, reduce the stigma, share resources,” said Salinas. “There are some simple laws out there,” she added.

According to Salinas, it is a good step to strengthen the employees of mental health and the financing of peer support programs.

“And it is an inexpensive barrier that the congress could actually support,” said Salinas.

Further steps are the effects of social media on the mental health of newborn people, and the Virginia Congressman, Don Beyer, says loneliness.

“More of us live alone than ever. We understood that happiness and prosperity are part of a sense of community,” said Beyer.

The democratic members of the Caucus say that they are concerned that existing psychological health forces, which are financed by Medicaid, could be on which chopping block could be. It happens that the Republicans are working on a household bill to reduce expenses.

“These cuts would mean that people will die. People will not have access to care they need,” said Salinas.

“Democrats, what do you do? You lie about what we do with Medicaid,” said House speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) This week.

Spokesman Johnson says that the Republicans are trying to strengthen medicaid.

“By eliminating things such as fraud, waste and abuse, which is a big problem in the program,” said Johnson.

Johnson said the house wants to say goodbye to this budget to the memorial day.
