Kristi Noem, secretary of the home protection authority, will come in Washington, DC (photo of Andrew Harnik/Getty Images) for a hearing of the hearing committee of the Senate Committee in the Senate of the Senate at the Capitol Hill in Dirksen Senate on Thursday, May 8, 2025.

Washington -The Top Democrat in a US Ministry of Justice of the Senate’s appropriation committee, Kristi NoEM, beat the financing of the financing of its agency and immigration of the Trump government for the immigration of the Trump government.

Senator Chris Murphy warned Noem that DHS assumed the funding of 65 billion US dollars in July – two months before the end of the financial year – and therefore shortly before triggering the Anti -Committee Act, a federal law that has banned government agencies.

“Your department is out of control,” Connecticut’s Democrat told Noem. “You go out of money.”

Noem, who appeared in front of the Senate subcommittee in front of the house in the home protection authority, also grilled by Democrats about the top -class case of a wrongly deported man in Maryland, who was sent to a notorious prison in El Salvador in March.

The “thin” budget proposal of the White House proposes 107 billion US dollars for DHS from October 1st and assumes that the Republicans are saying the reconciliation package that is considered in order to assign a total of massive $ 175 billion in border security.

“If we now live in a world in which the government spends the accounts that were priorities for Republicans and the priorities that were priorities for Democrats, I don’t know how to do a budget,” said Murphy.

Senator Patty Murray, the highest democrat of the full committee of the Senate appropriation, did nobody because he did not follow “our appropriation laws”.

She criticized how the implementation of the immigration of US citizens and immigrants with protected legal status.

“Your approach has set itself in American citizens and people who are legal without a criminal record,” said the Democrat in Washington.

She also criticized NoEM for issuing $ 100 million for TV ads that are not to the United States or self-sufficiency from praise from the President to the warning of migrants.

Names launched this week An initiative for providing “travel support” up to $ 1,000 without legal permission for itself, which would be $ 1 billion if President Donald Trump’s goal of deporting 1 million people. The source of these funds in the DHS budget is unclear.

Murray asked NoEM about more than $ 100 billion in DHS funds that are not used or re-programmed elsewhere for the enforcement of immigration, and called it “illegal freezer”.

Then she asked Noem when DHS would free these funds.

Noem did not answer and instead accused the bidges administration and said the previous administration “perverse” how the funds were used.

Murray said she did not think it was “credible that $ 100 billion would be used to violate the law.”

“I am very concerned about the fact that DHS is now handing over dramatically through the financing that the congress has not provided,” said Murray. “We take our responsibility seriously to finance your department and others. We have to have answers, we have to have an accountability and we have to make sure that you do not spend extremely money that you have not allocated.”

Abego Garcia Deportation

Noem climbed into a heated exchange with one of the Democrats in the panel, Maryland Senator Chris van Hollen, who traveled to El Salvador to speak with incorrectly deported Kilmar Abrego Garcia. The Trump administration has admitted that its deportation was an “administrative error”.

The United States’s Supreme Court unanimously decided that the Trump government has to “make it easier” to return to Abrego Garcia, which was originally sent in brutal Cecot, but is now housed in a different prison.

Van Hollen asked Noem what DHS had done to bring Abrego Garcia back, who brought back a court order in 2019, who had his return to his home country El Salvador out of fear that he would be damaged by gang violence.

Noem did not answer what steps the Trump government had taken, and said because Abego Garcia is a citizen of El Salvador, he is in the care of this nation and cannot be brought back.

Trump contradicted his own administration and explains that if he wanted to bring Agreogo Garcia back, but not because he believes that Abrego Garcia has gang bonds.

While Trump officers like Noem claimed that Abrego Garcia has connections to the MS-13 gang, the court and federal judge Paula Xinis, who has the chairman, were not presented any evidence.

Nobody then wondered why Van Hollen primarily campaigned for Abrego Garcia.

“Your attorney for a well -known terrorist is alarming for me,” she said.

Van Hollen said that he campaigned for a proper procedure that the Trump government was accused of being driven back in its deportations. A federal judge in Louisiana plans to hold a hearing next week to determine whether the Trump government has violated a proper procedure in the deportation of a 2-year-old US citizen and her mother to Honduras.

Murphy also didn’t press anyone on this topic and asked how she coordinated with El Salvador for the publication of Abrego Garcia.

“There is no scenario in which Abrego Garcia will return to the USA,” she said.

Nobody said, even if Abrego Garcia were brought back to the United States, “we would deport him again immediately.”

GOP worried about students, TPS owners

Some Republicans in the committee, including the committee chairman, expressed concerns how the Trump government’s procedure influenced the students with visas.

“There are so many others who deserve an exam,” said chairwoman Susan Collins, a Maine Republican who said that she was concerned about students from Canada who attended school in her home state. “But these are double -written Canadian students, and they have been crossing the border for years without difficulty.”

She said Canadian students were stopped by US customs and border protection and intensive demonstrations.

“You have student visa, but you will be exposed to extensive search queries and surveys,” she said to Noem. “I don’t want us to keep Canadian students from studying at the northern Maine institutions that we have for education.”

Noem said she would examine it.

The Republican Senator of Alaskan, Lisa Murkowski, has increased the topic of paperwork that was not processed for those with momentary protected status in their state. TPS is granted to those who come from a country that is considered too perilous or unstable to return due to war, natural disasters or other instability.

Murkowski said that several groups of immigrants in their state with momentary protected status and humanitarian protection have the risk of losing their occupational safety, such as Afghans, Haitian, Venezolans and Ukrainians.

“The majority of these people are only really valued members of their new community,” said Murkowski. “They support us to meet the needs of the workforce and really contribute to tax assessment.

She said that US citizenship and immigration services have not dealt with TPS or humanitarian prolongs for up to five months.

Noem said that those with TPS are considered and admitted that some Ukrainians I received an incorrect e -mail This notified them that their status was revoked.

She said that DHS did not make a decision as to whether TPS should be renewed for Ukrainians or not to whom the status was granted to the country due to the persistent invasion of the country in Russia.

“Some of these TPS programs have been available for many, many years, but the evaluation of why TPS should be used and when it can be used by a country is the process that the administration goes through,” said Noem.
