In 2020, after a summer shook protests by US cities, the words “Black Lives Matter” from the rally scream of demonstrators of racial equity went to words that line the streets on which they marched.

After the death of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery, the nationwide artists commissioned the artists to paint the BLM Street wall painting in solidarity with the billing of police brutality and racism through the unprecedented mass meetings.

Five years later, many of the murals are still cultivated by activists and community groups, while wear, construction and vandalism mean the end of others. And the murals that were generally assumed that they have inspired them all-35 feet high on a block from the white house on a street block painted yellow gigantic letters.

Muriel Bowser, the mayor of Washington, DC, ordered the crews to remove the BLM wall picture in March under pressure of the Congress led by Republicans. Bowser noticed that the mural – an act of defiance against the first government of President Donald Trump – “inspired millions of people and helped our city with painful time”.

Keyonna Jones, one of seven artists who painted Black Lives Matter Plaza, said she understands why Bowser acted and that the removal of the murals does not go back from its historical importance.

“To see that it was replicated all over the world within 24 hours,” said Jones during the Plaza’s offspring. “I think that really speaks for the power of art and that is my favorite part of the whole experience.”

According to Urban Art Mapping, a database with public street art remains, almost 150 wall paintings “Black Lives Matter”.

Lindsey Owen, an art historian in Chicago, said everyone was the common cultural and political purpose of a community.

“Even if BLM Plaza has been broken down, the mutual reflection of these murals ensures their persistence,” said Owen, “now also reflects the lack of rooms that have been removed.”

Here you will find details of some remarkable BLM wall paintings:

Michelle Browder, the artist, said her design reflected in the history of the area and the community signaled the willingness to remedy the relief in order to combine the mural.

“It gives us a feeling of uniqueness and shows that our statement not only has meaning, but also invites people to look down, read and think about what happened in this room,” said Browder.

In the city center of Oakland, residents and community groups “Black Lives Matter” painted along three blocks of the 15th Steets. A month later, another mural was built by the Queer Healing Arts Center that honors black trans- and queer life.

Tyrone Motley, who maintained the V during re -painting in 2023, said it is crucial that Hartford continues to protect the mural even when others disappear across the country.
