Mackinac Island, Michigan (AP) – Democratically Gretchen Whitmer advertised her achievements as governor of Michigan in a speech on Thursday when she crosses the center of her second term and continuously hovers as a potential presidential candidate in 2028.
Whitmer, who was criticized by some Democrats that she accepted a friendlier tone with President Donald Trump, suggested that her willingness to work with others to do things, made it an effective leader for the battlefield state that Trump won last autumn and 2016.
Last month, Whitmer organized a successful contract with the Trump administration to secure recent combat aircraft and jobs on an air force, and Trump assured the middle west that he would finance a project to protect the enormous lakes from invasive carp.
There were also some unpleasant moments alongside Trump, who are despised by those who want Whitmer to vehemently oppose the Republican President and among the top democrats about how to approach him best.
Whitmer appeared with Trump and shared a surprising hug. The President praised her as a “excellent job” – a departure from his criticism of her during his first term. Whitmer also had an unpleasant encounter with Trump in the Oval Office at the beginning of this year.
“And that’s why I am not much interested in headlines. What is important to me,” she said in a speech to the political elites and managing directors of Michigan at a political conference.
“In the past six and a half years I have found that the leadership is about fighting hard, often quietly for their big goals,” she said. “Your tolerance to take a few blows to win the fight.”
Whitmer is circumscribed and cannot strive for re -election. A wide range of candidates has been impressed since January to replace them. In interviews with the Associated Press, every Democrat in the race in Whitmer’s leadership praised in the course of the second Trump government: Foreign Minister Jocelyn Benson, Lt. Governor Garlin Gilchrist II and Sheriff of Genesee County, Chris Swanson.
Mike Duggan, the long -time Democratic Mayor of Detroit, who runs as an independent for the governor, had praise for Whitmer’s non -partisanity this year in a speech at the Policy Conference.
“I think the governor showed us how to do it,” he told the Associated Press after his speech on Wednesday evening. “She does not agree on the Canadian tariffs. And she is right. The Canadian tariffs certainly violated Michigan, but she does not agree in a political point of view. It does not carry out any personal attacks.”
According to AP VoiceCast, about half of the Michigan voters in the 2024 elections had a “somewhat” or “very” favorable opinion of Whitmer, while she had looked at her under half.
Her speech comes a day after Trump said that he was sorry for two men who were sentenced to kidnap and killing Whitmer in 2020 because of the leadership of a conspiracy. Whitmer wrote extensively about the experience of political memoirs educated in her last year and accused Trump, the political hatred that motivated the system.
During a moderated session on Thursday, Whitmer said she was disappointed with the news and indicated greater anger. She condemned political violence and said that she planned to talk to Trump about the matter.
“We now have an ongoing dialogue … very different from the first term,” she said about Trump and turned to the audience.
Whitmer said in her last 19 months as a governor that she would like to conclude a contract for street financing and improve Michigan’s gloomy literacy.
Race for Whitmer’s successor has started
The race for Whitmer’s successor is closely linked to the same topics. Duggan laid out a plan to improve education on Wednesday. The Republican Chairman of the Senate’s minority, Aaric Nesbitt, who runs for the governor in 2026, criticized Whitmer that she did not make any further improvements in the six years in the six years in which she was a governor, and said that she had driven out companies from the state by making Michigan less competitive.
“It missed the possibilities,” he said about her legacy in an interview.
Other Republicans who replace Whitmer are the US representative John James and the former Attorney General Mike Cox in Michigan.
Whitmer is one of several democratic governors who are seen in 2028 as potential candidates for the presidency. In addition to California Gavin Newsom, Illinois’ JB Pritzker and Kentuckys Andy Beshear, every interaction with Trump was examined, while the Democratic Party was looking for a recent leader.
