There is an elderly rural metaphor that applies to many politicians today. It is the “fence post turtle” metaphor. A person is walking down the street and sees an elderly wooden fence post with a turtle sitting on top, balancing uncomfortably on its shell. When you look at this turtle, you immediately know three things about it: 1) It doesn’t belong up there, 2) It didn’t get up there on its own, and 3) It’s only a matter of time before someone comes along and knocks it off the fence post.
Kamala Harris is a picket turtle. We all know how she political career beganWe all know why they Joe Biden’s Vice Presidential Election 2020.
But now it is 2024 and the question arises: Which of Donald Trump’s possible vice presidential candidates will represent the biggest challenge for Kamala Harris?
Vice President Harris’ former communications director recently said there was a Republican who would pose the “biggest threat” to her vice presidency if elected of former President Trump 2024 Vice-candidate.
Ashley Etienne, who served as Harris’ communications director in 2021, told CNN on Friday that she considers Ohio Republican Senator JD Vance to be an “incredible debater” and a Challenge for Harris in the upcoming election.
“I think JD Vance would be the biggest threat [to] Kamala Harris, in some ways. I mean, he’s an incredible debater,” Etienne told CNN: “I think he has this quality that makes him relatable to the one to two percent of those who might actually vote or who are still undecided and who will actually pay attention to the debates because most people don’t pay attention to the debates.”
That’s engaging, especially coming from a former communications director for Kamala Harris, but it misses an essential point, which is that the biggest threat to Kamala Harris is simply Kamala Harris herself.

Granted, some people think Kamala Harris is doing a great job, and if you lined those people up, they would all sleep a lot better. But aside from those few people, there are many more who look at Vice President Harris and wonder what the hell Joe Biden (or whoever actually made that decision) was thinking. But aside from JD Vance, who is indeed quick-witted and well-informed—two qualities Kamala Harris sadly lacks—there are a plethora of possible Trump vice presidential nominees who could make Kamala Harris look even more like a picket-post turtle.
Rumor has it that there is even one person on former President Trump’s candidate list who has already decided to do so: Tulsi Gabbard.
The fact is that Kamala Harris has built a career of failing to the top, but now she has probably reached the limit. Her approval ratings are Way under water and sinkingVery few people (including Tulsi Gabbard, of course) believe that they are a Chance for the top spotunless Joe Biden’s utter failure in the next few months gets her to. And there will probably be a vice presidential debate this fall – it’s the usual format – and this time she won’t be running against Mike Pence. She will almost certainly be running against someone younger, more determined, more motivated and, frankly, smarter.
JD Vance could. So could Tulsi Gabbard. And everyone on the various conjectural lists of Trump’s vice presidential nominees. Whoever Trump chooses, he will have as his vice presidential opponent a woman with the political instincts of a potted plant and the personal magnetism of a sebaceous cyst.
Failing to the top is never the way to get to the top. But sometimes you can get pretty close, as Kamala Harris explains. But barring another disaster, Kamala Harris’s term will end on the fence this fall.
Maybe she’ll get a gig on “The View.” The people there are about as swift as she is.
