Chicago (AP) – The Chicago Community leaders advanced on Wednesday with preparations for the influx of troops and immigration agents of the National Guard that the city awaits, and advises residents about their rights and the organization of protests with fresh urgency.
Details about the operation are scant, but President Donald Trump has reinforced and explained the rhetoric of crimes in the third largest city in the country that an approach to immigration and a commitment to the national guards are, despite the objections of the local leaders and a decision of the federal government, that a similar commitment in Los Angeles was illegal.
Preparations seem to be familiar in the democratic stronghold, which has often been found in Trump’s crossories.
Nevertheless, the leaders of schools, churches and community groups – especially in the city’s immigrants as well as black and Latin American districts – say gravity and coordination in preparing for the expected employ of the troops and the associated attention industry.
This is how Chicago is preparing.
Demonstrators say they are ready
Even without knowing what will unfold, Chicago’s energetic activists distributed “emergency protest plans” that promised to demonstrate within a few hours after the national entry.
Organizers from immigrant law groups, unions, clergy and anti-violence organizations said they work together more than ever.
“We have a stronger broader movement that is preparing for mobilization,” said Lawrence Benito, head of the Illinois Coalition for Migrant and Refugee Rights. “People still have to pursue their lives. We make sure that people are prepared and we are ready to react.”
The municipalities of the migration background have been on alert since the second time in January in January and have launched a nationwide immigration authority in Chicago.
Activists say that they have already offered countless knowledge of legal rights and have added hours for a hotline in which people can report immigration liability. The Mayor of Chicago, Brandon Johnson, recently signed an executive order in which the long -standing sanctuary guidelines of the city were repeated, which the local police prohibit the coordinating with the federal immigration agent.
Trump’s plans for Chicago
This week Trump signaled that he is ready to mobilize and combat the federal authorities despite Johnson and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker in Chicago. Trump did not give a timeline for the operation in Chicago and he again amazed the outlook on Wednesday by suggesting New Orleans as the next possible place.
Trump’s administration stated that she would soon expand immigration operations in Chicago, and the Ministry of Homeland Security requested restricted logistical support at the Naval Station Great Lakes outside the city.
The administration used the national guard to Los Angeles in summer and as part of his unprecedented takeover of law enforcement authorities in Washington, DC, where he has direct legal control. His administration plans to make an appeal against the Californian deployment decision.
Trump has often awarded Chicago and other Democrats. His government recently began playing the city’s daily crime protocol, including the employ of shootings at the Labor Day weekend as justification for the introduction of troops.
“I want to go to Chicago and have this incompetent governor,” said Trump on Wednesday.
He and Pritzker acted Barbs against the problem for days. Pritzker, a two-term governor and more often Trump critic, became the possible candidate of the President of 2028.
“I cannot live in a fantasy country in which I can pretend that Trump was not tearing this country for personal greed and power,” said Pritzker on Wednesday to X. During an event later, he said reporters that his office received no additional information from the Federal Government.
Trump’s plans in Chicago were hardly supported. Only a handful of republicans and conservative leaders said they welcomed the intervention.
Johnson and Pritzker have repeatedly pointed out the city’s crime drop and instead asked more federal financing for prevention programs.
In the other major US cities, Chicago’s violent crime has dropped overall as a whole, although there is a persistent problem in parts of the city.
A damper at Mexican Independence Day Ceasers
In Chicago, a enormous and flourishing Mexican community houses, and the risk of troop operation and the approach of immigration has celebrated a damper on the Mexican Independence Day in the next two weeks.
The organizers recognized that the threat from immigration lens could keep some people at home, but they escalate the security measures and invite more allies. It is a similar tactic that activists for annual protests in May, as well as the fears of public meetings were high.
Teresa Fraga, who organizes an event in the city’s mighty Mexican quarter, said that the event has hired more security, lawyers and neighborhood patrols.
“It is a dark cloud that hangs over our heads,” she said. “But we are planning a safe event.”
Worries in black neighborhoods
The concerns are also very high in many of the black districts of the city, in which organizations advise the residents about how their rights should interact with the law enforcement authorities.
Dozens of black churches plan to take part in “resistance Sunday” this weekend and to spread information about legal rights during the traffic stops and other encounters.
“We need resources, no troops,” said Rev. Marshall Hatch, a prominent civil rights activist. “We are not interested in this charade of troops.”
Johnson and other black mayors have racist Trump’s Targeting Democratic cities. And Trump has often used racist stories about urban crimes when he spoke about the unprecedented employ of troops in the capital of the nation.
“The president’s threats to send federal troops to Chicago are a clear obvious attack on the black community and the immigrant community,” said the Chicago alliance against racist and political repression in a statement.
City schools are preparing
Chicago’s public school system suggested that families create telephone trees to quickly exchange information and organize foot-in-school groups to “offer security in numbers”.
“We know that the potential of an increased presence of the federal government creates fear and fear of security at school and in security in the broad community,” wrote Chicago public school in a letter to the parents.
Members of the Chicago Teachers Union planned to distribute materials in schools with tips on legal rights and the creation of a buddy system on the school.
