President Donald Trump calls him “Communist”. His critics say he wants to remove the police. Zohran Mamdani insists that he is only a guy who tries to make New York City more affordable.
Mamdanis Meteoritic rise to the democratic candidate for the New York mayor has put his former and current political positions in close examination. If he were elected, he would be the first Muslim and Indian Mayor of the city. He was the most liberal mayor of the city for generations.
When he tries to expand his support from the elections in November, the legislature of the state has shifted more into the center on certain topics – and distances itself from other potentially harmful political attitudes.
The opponents of Mamdanis-Zwei Democrats, the former governor Andrew Cuomo and the reigning mayor Eric Adams, and a Republican, Curtis Sliwa, are a moderate alternative to the 33-year-old.
Some top democrats of New York, including the US Senator Chuck Schumer, have only slowly supported Mamdani. Some, including the chairman of the Democratic Party of the State Party and some subordinate members of the congress, said they will not support him. But remarkable names have thrown their weight behind in the past few days, including Governor Kathy Hochul and the two best laws of the state.
Here he actually stands:
He is a democratic socialist, not a communist
While Trump and other opponents repeatedly call Mamdani as a communist, he identifies himself as something else: a democratic socialist. He believes that the government should play a role in reducing the economic differences, but it does not work for a communist system in which ownership is common.
Mamdani prefers the boost in taxes to the affluent to finance suggestions from which he argues that they would make the city more affordable. This includes free bus service, universal childcare and his signature problem: freezing rent increases for the city’s 1 million rental apartments. Opponents say that a rental freeze would harm landlords who were also hit challenging by inflation.
Perhaps nowhere is the “communist” label more than in terms of Mamdani’s proposal to set up a pilot program for grocery stores in the city. The billionaire John Catsimatidis, who has food chains, said the program “would move us down to the bread lines of the old Soviet Union”.
In an interview with The Bulwark, Mamdani framed his proposal for five businesses that would sell products at wholesale prices as a modest experiment. He said if it didn’t work: “C’est la vie, then the idea was wrong.”
He was also exposed to criticism of comments that he made about NBC’s “Meet the Press”, in which he said in an economically just world: “I don’t think we should have billionaires.” But Mamdani said that as a mayor he would like to work with billionaires to solve the city’s problems.
He no longer supports the police to remove the police
After the George Floyd police killed in Minnesota in 2020, Mamdani was part of a series of New York Democrats who campaigned to reduce the police’s budget and often scold the brutality of the police.
In a social media contribution, Mamdani described the department “racist, anti-queer and a great threat to public security”. In another case, Mamdani wrote: “Defund this rogue agency” about a post -show video from NYPD, who had beaten up a man who had disputed with a police officer.
During his mayor campaign, Mamdani distanced himself from these earlier calls to reduce department financing and explained that she did not represent his current agenda. Mamdani said he would maintain the NYPD’s staff level, but also create a novel “security of the community department” that teams would apply teams for mental health agencies and non -armed civil servants to cope with certain emergency calls in which people are involved in the psychiatric crisis.
And he has alleviated his general rhetoric to the law enforcement authorities. In an interview with the New York Times, he replied to “Yes” when he was asked whether he was owed an apology to the officials to describe the department racist, and said that his comments in 2020 were “at the peak of frustration”.
The opponents of Mamdanis were skeptical about his shift. Adams, a former police captain, says Mamdani has changed his position on law enforcement because the voters would not support the department. Cuomo said Mamdani falls freaking and gave the voters no clear picture of who he really is.
He criticized Israel and defended the Palestinian civil rights
Mamdani is a deafening defender of Palestinian civil rights and has accused the Israeli government of committing genocide in Gaza.
He supports an economic boycott of Israel and has promised that Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu New York City would visit that he would arrest an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court of Ehren and Netanyahu for war crimes. The United States is not a member of the court and Israel denies that it deals with genocide or war crimes.
Mamdani repeatedly condemned the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023 and described the slaughter of the militant group as “regret” by the militant group. He also said that he believes that Israel has a right to exist, even though he favors Jewish citizens towards others without a hierarchy.
This has not released critics who characterize such convictions of Israeli politics as anti -Semitic.
Before the primary school, Mamdani was asked whether he sees the expression “globalizes the intifada”, a slogan, some of some calls to violence against Israeli civilians. At that time, Mamdani described it as “a desperate desire for equality and equality in compliance with the Palestinian human rights”.
But Mamdani, who did not occupy the sentence during his campaign, now says that he would prevent others from using the slogan.
