The house said goodbye to a resolution that honored life and legacy of Charlie Kirk and condemned political violence in a largely cross -party coordination on Friday that seemed hard for democrats.
The vote was 310-58, and 95 Democrats supported the resolution, which spokesman Mike Johnson (R-La.) Shot nine days after Kirk’s conservative activist in Utah.
Thirty -eight democrats voted “present” and 58 “No.”
It was political Hard coordination for many Democratswho do not want to celebrate Kirk’s politics, but vehemently convicted the shootout and did not want to be seen as a sympathy with political violence.
The upper democratic leaders informed their caucus on Thursday that they would support the decision, but asked individual members to choose their conscience. It turned out for many democrats, especially for those who represented minority communities, a painful decision, which were sometimes a goal of Kirk’s political considerations. Many viewed Kirk as a split figure in President Trump model, not as the association presented in the solution.
“It is a damn if you do this, damn it if you have no situation,” said Rep. Yvette Clarke (DN.Y.), head of the Black Caucus of the Congress, before the vote.
Before the vote, Johnson said that “no reason” and “no excuse” for Democrats said to vote on the decision and said it was not a partisan language in it.
This partisan dispute over Kirk’s legacy sent shock waves in Washington and the country when the Trump government -which was cheered on by the Maga movement -started against someone who apparently answered the death of Kirk’s death or in question of his virtue, and the Democrats answered with or well -welled war rights that the speech from an authoritarian President are tramplimized.
The Dissolution praised KirkA close ally of Trump and founder of the conservative youth organization Turning Point USA as a “brave American patriot” who “triggered his faith with conviction, courage and compassion”. It claims that he “worked tirelessly to promote the unit without impairing the conviction”.
Kirk’s murder calls “a sobering memory of the growing threat of political extremism and hatred in our society” and said: “Fi from every level – government, education, media and beyond – are united in clear conviction of political violence.”
The resolution decides that the house of Kirk’s murder “and all forms of political violence” condemn; Praise law enforcement and emergency staff for the search for Kirk’s alleged shooters; And expands Kirk’s widow Erika Kirk and his two children condolences.
It “honors life, leadership and inheritance by Charlie Kirk, whose steadfast commitment of the constitution, the civil discourse and biblical truth inspired a generation to appreciate and defend the blessings of freedom” and “calls all Americans – independent breed, party provider – to respect themselves to respect the American values, to respect American values, the American values (*38*) and respect the American values.
The solution corresponds to a formal explanation of the house, but does not have the legal force.
The resolution is just the latest action by House Republicans who honor Kirk after his assassination. In the hours after the shootout, Johnson performed a moment of silent prayer on the house floor, before that turned into a screaming match between Republicans and Democrats.
And Monday Johnson led a vigil for Kirk in the Capitol. While he invited members of both parties to participate, only a handful of Democrats took part in the vigil, none of which were the best leaders.
The Senate has gone a similar but shorter procedure. Resolution, condemned Kirk’s assassination attempt And to honor his life and heir through unanimous approval at the beginning of this week.
