Washington (AP) – The US government had closed, and Donald Trump asked Democrats and Republicans to work together to get out of chaos.
“You have to bring people into a room and they just have to make offers for the welfare of the country,” said Trump.
The year was in 2013 and Trump was a business mogul at the time that had not yet entered politics. Now that he is president, Trump and his party take a strikingly different attitude and refused to negotiate with Democrats in a closure that appeals to the Republicans.
It was only last year that the democratic chairman of the Senate, Chuck Schumer, ideologues, who “believe that closing is somehow a good thing is if it gets them what they want”. Now Schumer and most of his with Democrats reject invoices to open and finance the government because they want to include the provisions on health care.
If you have been in Washington long enough, you have most likely argued both sides of a state closure. Both parties have used the risk of shutdown to force a political result, and both sides have convicted the other to do the same. Nobody likes to switch off, but each side insists that the American people are on their side – whether their team supports a shutdown or not.
“Everyone only makes the mistake of believing in the justice of their positions, and he blindly makes them for the reality of the switch-off,” said Brendan Buck, who served as a top aid for the spokesman for John Boehner, R-Ohio and Paul Ryan, R-Wis. “It is a political messaging exercise that is framed as a negotiating tactic, but there are very few evidence that it really fulfills a political purpose. It is more of a platform to talk about what is important for you.”
Only a few politicians – save the few moderate who always switch on shutdown maneuvers – are immune.
When Vice President Jd Vance was a senator last year and the congress was again on the verge of a decline in financing, he made a confident case that he used the government to exploit the government as a lever to get what Republicans wanted.
“Why shouldn’t we try to force this fight against the government to get something out of it that is good for the American people?” Asked Vance in a podcast interview in September 2024. “Why have a government if it is not a functioning government?”
Vance is now pursuing a completely different approach. When he stood in the White House at the beginning of this week, he said that the Democrats were “not reasonable” to exploit their suggestions as a “leverage” and to close the government, unless we give them everything they want.
In 2013, Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren argued in her first term in a floor speech that the “naked minimum we can do” to pass a short-term financing calculation in order to “keep the doors open and to keep the lights”.
Now Warren has voted twice against a short-term financing law, which has been promoted by GOP legisans and the White House.
“Democrats are at the negotiating table. We don’t have a long list of demands. We do not say that we have to find more money,” wrote Warren on the social media website X.
What changes from every switch -off scenario is the specific guideline that the incitement wants from the incitement.
Already in autumn 2013, the Republican managed by Texan Senator Ted Cruz and Conservatives in the House of Representatives were convinced that a law to finance government funds that are required for money from the Affordable Care Act and led the nation into a 16-day closure. In January 2018, Democrats, which insisted that youthful immigrants, who are known as the “dreamer”, exposed the government’s legal protection. But Trump refused to negotiate and the shutdown ended after three days.
Later in Trump’s first term, he demanded money for a border wall that would not approve the legislators, and Trump said that he would be “the one who closes them” when he was responsible for the closures with the congress leaders. This partial shutdown lasted 35 days.
A common topic is that the party that forces shut down almost never gets what it wants. The law on affordable care was not defeated, the Democrats only received a vote on the protection of “dreamer” and Trump had to explain a national emergency to get money for its border wall. If the past is prologue, this would indicate that Democrats will not get what they want this time: an expansion of the subsidies of the healthcare system for people who buy plans through the Affordable Care Act, as well as a reverse of the Medicaid cuts, which were introduced by the GOP signature at the beginning of this year.
Michael Thorning, who for the former Senator Tom Udall, DN.M.
“It is difficult to recognize a pattern of public accountability there,” said Thorning, now the director of the project for structural democracy in the cross -party policy. “I think that probably reduces the risk of what was considered a rather hard tactic.”
The press office of the White House did not react immediately to the responded statement on Trump’s earlier comments in connection with the shutdown. Her general press line gave an automatic message that due to the “switching off of the Democrat, the typical monitoring of this press grant for the democrat can occur”.
Later the spokeswoman Abigail Jackson replied: “Chuck Schumer and the Democrats are so desperate to distract from their decision to conclude the government that they have the AP writing stories written on their weeks old Instagram post.” She referred to a contribution from Schumer’s account, in which Trump’s comments from 2013 contained.
“Here is the truth: Democrats have closed the government because they want free health care for illegal aliens and they know that it hurts the American people,” said Jackson. “Just listen to your own statements.”
