(The hill) — Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) fell in front of left-wing protesters as he walked through a Senate office building on Thursday.
video The incident depicts the fall of the longtime GOP leader on his way to the Capitol to vote. The Kentucky Republican was approached by a protester who asked if he supported Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s actions at the time of the fall.
McConnell was assisted by his security detail and a Capitol Police officer before waving to protesters. He walked toward the Capitol under his own power, at times enlisting the support of his command.
A McConnell spokesman told The Hill that the 83-year-old politician is “doing well.” The senator survived polio as a child and has done so pointed after previous incidents caused “aftereffects” in his left leg. McConnell’s most recent fall came in February, when he fell down a miniature flight of stairs while leaving the Capitol.
He has also had a number of health incidents in recent years, including a few icy episodes and falls. In a fall in 2023, he suffered a concussion and a broken rib and had to be hospitalized.
McConnell announced earlier this year that he would not seek re-election in 2026, ending a career in the upper house that spanned more than four decades.
