Gov. Patrick Morrisey on Tuesday named a Beckley-based pastor to fill the House seat vacated last month by former Del. Brandon Steele, R-Raleigh, had become vacant.
John K. Jordan, a Republican, has been senior pastor of Calvary Assembly of God in Beckley, West Virginia, since 1998. He also serves and serves as Assistant Superintendent for the Appalachian Network Council of the Assemblies of God Board of Trustees for Southeastern University in Florida and is a faculty member at the Appalachian Network School of Ministry. He also holds a position in the General Presbytery of the Assemblies of God in Springfield, Missouri.
Steele, a lawyer by profession, resigned his seat in the House of Representatives last month. He said his resignation was necessary because “career opportunities” arose that would “interfere” with his work in the House of Representatives. His resignation came almost a year after he took office involved in a domestic disturbance where, loudly to a police reportHis wife called 911 on December 23, 2024 because he was drunk with assault rifles and yelling at people in their neighborhood.
Steele has served in the House of Representatives since 2018 and previously served as chairman of the House Government Organization Committee.
According to him, Jordan is originally from Parkersburg Professional biography from Calvary Assembly of God. According to a press release from Morrisey, Jordan holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of The Cumberlands and a Master of Science in Church Leadership from Assemblies of God Theological Seminary.
Jordan’s appointment remains after that of Del. Mike DeVault has a vacant seat in the state House of Representatives Resignation on Monday. DeVault said he resigned after “carefully considering” his “personal and professional circumstances.” A state Senate seat is also vacant since Sen. Donna Boley’s seat Resigned last week. Boley, 90, said she was retiring to focus on her health and family.
The regular 2026 legislative session is scheduled to begin on Wednesday.
