Gallup: Less than half of Democrats are satisfied with Joe Biden as Democratic candidate

It’s probably a good time to invest in companies that make antiperspirants, because it looks like Democrats are starting to sweat on a national level. The reason for their uncertainty, of course, is the ongoing and increasingly obvious mental and physical decline of President Joe Biden, the resurgence of Donald Trump, and the state of the presidential election.

Now there is further evidence of this, as a Gallup poll released on Thursday shows that less than half of Democratic voters are cheerful to have vintage Joe as their presidential candidate.

Less than 50 percent of Democrats in a recent Gallup poll say they are cheerful that President Biden is their party’s presidential nominee, compared with 79 percent of Republicans surveyed who say they are pleased that former President Trump is their nominee.

The figures published by Gallup came during the meeting between Biden and Trump on first debate on Thursday evening raises further questions about whether an enthusiasm deficit could hurt Biden in his duel with his Republican rival this fall.

According to the Gallup poll, more than 50 percent of Democrats would rather nominate someone other than their candidate.

That’s not good, especially because at the time of this writing, the first debate is just hours away, both parties’ national conventions are in a few weeks, both campaigns are in full swing—and Donald Trump is ahead in both swing states and national polls.

Here is the onion:

The perception of Biden’s age speaks against him in the Gallup poll. Americans are far more concerned that the 81-year-old Biden is “too old” to be president than they are about the 78-year-old Trump.

Fifty-nine percent of respondents said they were very concerned about Biden’s age, while only 18 percent said this about Trump. Forty-one percent said they had “no concerns” about Trump being too vintage at all, while only 14 percent shared this view about Biden.

There’s a lot more to consider, including the popularity of both candidates — and Trump is ahead of Biden on almost every indicator — but the age issue is a huge one. Why? Because it’s not really about age. It’s about ability. Joe Biden is clearly losing whatever ability he ever had.

The problem for the Democrats is that it will split their party very badly. I can imagine three factions forming, perhaps very quickly.

  1. The Biden camp. This will include government officials, loyalists, advisers and anyone who sees an advantage in keeping vintage, shaky Joe in the White House. Jill Biden would likely be the unofficial leader of this faction.
  2. The Harris camp. There will be a significant minority, perhaps even a slim majority, of people who have lost all faith in vintage Joe’s ability to carry on, but who will be salivating at the prospect of the first “colored” vice president becoming the first “colored” president. If I had to guess, I’d say this will be the larger faction.
  3. The camp of those who choose none of the above. These are the few sane people who realize that the Democrats’ only chance of preventing the Trump sequel, “Trump 2 – This Time It’s Personal,” is to replace both vintage, confused Joe and giggling Kamala with someone more capable and moderate, which admittedly sets the bar very, very low. The problem is that the Democratic Party has almost no time left to do that. The only hope they have here is to pull off some kind of coup at the convention.

If the first debate goes badly for Joe Biden, the second and third groups will gain ground. But the clock is ticking, and Democrats are increasingly turning their sights to Joe Biden and, as mentioned above, are sweating.
