CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) — West Virginia politicians reacted Thursday to the Supreme Court’s blocking of Purdue Pharma’s bankruptcy agreement that could have contributed billions to compensate victims and combat the opioid epidemic.

According to a report by Nexstar’s The Hill, the 5-4 decision would also have protected the Sackler family from civil lawsuits.

Steve Williams, Democratic gubernatorial candidate for West Virginia and mayor of Huntington, issued a statement that said in part: “I am disappointed that this matter has not come to an end. Unfortunately, the thousands of victims of Purdue Pharma’s greed will not be compensated in the near future.”

Republican gubernatorial candidate and Attorney General Patrick Morrisey said, among other things: “We have fought hard – and are still fighting – to bring a sense of healing to the state. With this decision, we will redouble our efforts to hold those responsible for the harm done to our state accountable. We will explore new ways to close this case.”

The Hill contributed to this report.
