Whistling Past the Graveyard: Democratic Rep. Raskin claims Biden will headline the DNC even if he is not the nominee

There has been a lot of booing going on in the ranks of the Democratic Party since Joe Biden’s embarrassing and depressed debate performance. Not least among those booed is Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD), who now insists that Joe Biden will certainly be the keynote speaker and central figure at this year’s Democratic Convention, regardless of whether he is the actual nominee or not.

That is quite an admission:

Representative. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) said Sunday that the Democratic Party will need President Biden to play a decisive role at the Democratic National Convention in August, regardless of whether he becomes the party’s presidential nominee.

“So we are having a serious discussion about what to do. I can tell you one thing: Regardless of what President Biden decides … our party will be united, and our party needs him at the center of our thinking as we campaign,” Raskin said Sunday on MSNBC’s “Velshi.”

“And whether [Biden’s] The candidate, or someone else is the candidate, he will be the keynote speaker at our convention. He will be the figure around whom we rally to move forward and defeat the forces of authoritarianism and reaction in the country.”

That’s a lot of cognitive dissonance. Interestingly, Rep. Raskin believes Joe Biden is capable of making such a decision, or indeed any decision more consequential than what pudding to eat before his afternoon nap. But to be fair, that’s what you’d expect him to do at this point; you can hardly just admit that the president and standard-bearer of the Democratic Party is so confused as to be incompetent.

It’s also intriguing that he believes the party will be united. If they try to oust Biden through persuasion or coercion, it would almost certainly create a huge rift in the Democratic Party ranks. And the keynote speaker? It seems the president’s condition is deteriorating, and any attempt at a keynote address could be just plain depressed.

But this is where the whistling at the cemetery comes into play: In a February 2023 conversation with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer, Raskin claimed that criticism of the president’s decline was merely “age-related unfair attacks.”

But now Raskin told MSNBC’s Ali Velshi that Democrats are having a “serious discussion” about what to do with the confused president.

Raskin added that “Joe Biden’s performance during the debate was a big problem,” but “there is also tremendous affection and love for Joe Biden in our party. That makes the situation difficult for everyone… it’s a political party and we have different views.” He then attacked the Republican Party, which supposedly takes the opposite view when it comes to the likely nominee, former President Donald Trump.

There are few Democrats as blatantly partisan as Jamie Raskin. His claim that Joe Biden would still play a major role in the Democratic Party’s 2024 election despite his sadly obvious mental and physical decline is arduous to explain until you realize that Raskin doesn’t care about the country or the people—he cares only about the party.

The DNC does not need Joe Biden. In fact, the DNC would be better off right now if he were not in office or not involved in the party. Those who make shrewd decisions will admit this truth to even Jamie Raskin by the time the Democratic National Convention comes around.
