The Republican National Convention (RNC) begins next week, July 15-18, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Despite the madness likely going on behind the scenes, it pales in comparison to the madness taking place within the Democratic Party. This is likely why RNC co-chair Lara Lea Trump was able to take the time to speak with sportswriter and podcaster Sage Steele.
Steele regularly interviews politicians, but not for politics’ sake; she seems to want to take the time to dig deeper and look at her interviewees from a holistic perspective, rather than from the perspective of their partisan leanings or specific role or duty. While many media outlets do this for Democrats and leftists, very few do it for conservatives, so Steele’s podcast is refreshing in that regard.
It’s one thing to hear great things about someone before you meet them. It’s another thing entirely to actually meet them, spend time with them, and realize that all the good things you’ve heard are a massive understatement! 🤍

It’s one thing to hear great things about someone before you meet them. It’s quite another to actually meet them, spend time with them, and realize that all the good things you’ve heard are a massive understatement!
I realized that I have so much in common with @LaraLeaTrump – a daughter who has an incredible bond with her parents, a mother who always tries to put her children first, and a career woman who is committed to making a change in this world for her children and in this country!!
I am so grateful that Lara – the co-chair of the RNC – took the time out of her crazy schedule to share so much: her love and concern for her children’s grandfather @realDonaldTrumphow she deals with personal attacks on her family, why she will never forget her humble roots in North Carolina, and much more.

Given Biden’s cognitive and other pronounced issues, Steele asked Lea Trump about the staying power of former President and likely GOP nominee Donald Trump. Lea Trump said she has known him for 16 years and he is in better shape than ever.
But he’s incredible. Honestly, I have no other explanation for it than that he was created for this. He was made for this. I always say he was created for a time like this. And you can take that in a lot of different ways. But I really believe it. I really do. I don’t know how to explain him.
When Lea Trump spoke about her father-in-law, the love, respect and affection for him was clear in her voice. Lea Trump spoke about her calling to motherhood and family, as well as her commitment to the mission of bringing Trump back to the White House; not just to win, but for America’s sake.
You know, he himself said, this is bigger than me. This is about the future of America. And believe me, if this man wanted the effortless way out, he would never have ridden down that escalator in 2015. He certainly would not have decided to run again in 2024 because he knew – I think he knew in 2015 – how they were going to come after him because he told us, listen, if I do what I have to do, if we do this right, we’re going to find out who our real friends are.
For better or for worse, they have experienced this, including the legal battle waged against Donald Trump over the past two years after he announced his re-election bid. Steele asked Lea Trump if she was worried her father-in-law might end up in prison.
I’m scared of how far it could go because I find the idea that we’re where we are now shocking and I don’t think I ever expected to experience something like this, to be candid. And of course I’m scared that it could happen to him. I know that no matter what is thrown at him, he’ll find a way to make the best of it.
Steele also asked if the family feared for Trump’s safety and was concerned about his penchant for socializing, especially outside of the usual opportunities of rallies and political speeches. Lea Trump said that’s just the way Trump is, and they couldn’t afford to get into a situation of fear – they had to let Trump be Trump.
Yeah, but you know, that’s why he does it. He wants to connect with people and that’s where he shines. And you really see the true nature of this man. You can put him in any crowd, you can put him in a group of billionaires and he’ll do great. You can send him out of the bodega in Harlem and he’ll do great.
We can send him to the Bronx and he’ll be great. No matter where you send Donald Trump, he’s authentic to the core, even over the top at times. I think for some people, he’s out there among people and wants to interact with them.
Some of that authenticity, philanthropy and love for his family is reflected in Lea Trump’s Instagram page, where she regularly posts about the campaign trail, her children and her adoration for her grandfather. An Instagram post of Trump attending his granddaughter’s Grandest Friend’s Day went viral.
Steele asked Lea Trump this final question: “What is the one thing you think voters, everyone in America, should know about Donald Trump, the husband, the father-in-law, the grandfather?” Lea Trump responded:
I just wish people could close their eyes for a moment, take the name Donald Trump out of everything and just listen to the man and his real message. And it’s a very positive message for the country. I can tell you that I had nothing to do with becoming a Trump. I come from a very different background than anyone else who’s ever been involved with this family before, and I was welcomed with open arms and felt very comfortable with my father-in-law and really the whole family very quickly. And that’s honestly one of the reasons I wanted to campaign for him in 2016, because I said to myself, well, I don’t know much about politics back then… God, God, have I learned my lesson now? But I know the man and I know that what I’m hearing out there about him is not true.

Yes, but honestly, I wish people could just get past the negativity that is forced on us about Donald Trump and his media portrayal and give him a chance. Listen to what he wants to do for the country. Believe me, he’s not doing this for himself.
Part of the focus of the RNC Next week we’ll look at what America looked like under a Donald Trump presidency and what it looks like now under Joe Biden. The daily topics and speakers will focus on how to make America luxurious again, how to make America sheltered again, how to make America mighty again, and how to make America great again.
This week will see the expression of Trump’s plans to right the ship and put America back on solid footing. Lea Trump hopes people will put aside their prejudices, misgivings and reservations to hear Trump’s vision.
I just wish people could put aside their biases about the things he says and wants to do for America for a moment and think about what their lives were like when Donald Trump was president. [N]You can argue that life was better in this country, better all over the world, and I think that’s all he wants. He wants to make it a better place.
