WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – President Joe Biden is trying to quell calls for him to step down as the Democratic nominee.
One of the country’s largest unions advised him to stay in the race.
On Wednesday, Biden was greeted with cheers by members of the AFL-CIO.
“You have always supported us, so we will support you,” said AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler.
This is very different from what the president hears from members of his own party. He praised union leaders for their work.
“The middle class built this country. They built the middle class,” Biden said.
President Biden also used the moment to criticize former President Donald Trump’s economic policies.
“His proposals will bankrupt the country. His proposals will trigger a recession. His proposal will lead to higher interest rates,” Biden said.
West Virginia Republican Senator Shelley Moore Capito says President Biden’s policies are hurting the middle class.
“Families have lost over $25,000 in purchasing power in the last three years,” Moore Capito said.
Trump held a rally in Florida on Tuesday evening where he presented his own plans for the economy.
“I will not cut Social Security and Medicare by a penny, and I will not raise the retirement age by a day,” Trump said.
The former president also called on President Biden to repeat the debate.
“Let’s have one more debate this week so sleepy Joe Biden can prove to everyone around the world that he has what it takes to be president,” Trump said.
Both have further campaign events planned for later this week.
