Senator Tim Scott (R-SC) remains to provide the church on the first night of the Republican National Convention (RNC). At the beginning of his eight-minute speech, Scott interrupted the largely scheduled and politically focused event with a stirring appeal to the greatness of God. In his original way as a storyteller, Scott referred on Saturday to the saving power of God that saved former President and Republican candidate Donald Trump from the assassin’s bullet.
If you didn’t believe in miracles before Saturday, you better do so now!
We thank Almighty God that we live in a country that still believes in the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords, the Alpha and the Omega!
And our God… Our God still saves. He still liberates. And he still sets free. Because on Saturday the devil came to Pennsylvania with a gun in his hand. But an American lion rose again and roared!
Oh yes…, he roared!
Those opening sentences received the biggest applause and cheers, and rightly so. As Trump himself admitted on Sunday, it was only the power of God that saved him. You can bet that the party that booed God in 2012 is unlikely to be rambling about His power in 2024. From the opening invocation to the various administrative meetings, God was invited and honored; so at least one party is still a secure haven for people of faith.
Scott continued his remarks, sharing some aspects of his story, “From Cotton to Congress.” This time, he effectively tied our nation’s current problems to the need for Trump’s policies. Scott spoke about rejecting victimhood and reiterated that America is not a racist country. “But if you look for racism today, you’ll find it in cities run by Democrats.”
Scott encouraged:
“[C]conservative values restore hope. Republican policies elevate people[…] This is a difficult time for our nation. Joe Biden is asleep at the wheel and we are heading for a cliff. America, we deserve better. We deserve so much better.”
Scott spoke about his partnership with Trump and how they worked to get Americans tax breaks and opportunity zones in inner cities. How Trump secured the country’s borders and that he would do it again. Scott, always a pastor, spoke about this vision for the future:
“This November we are not only deciding the fate of the next four years. We are setting the course for the next 40 years.”
As Scott cheered, “We are the Republican Party of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln. Of Ronald Reagan and Donald Trump!” the crowd erupted in chants of “Four more years!”
In his conclusion, Scott built a bridge and gave the Republican Party a recent face: “We are not just the Grand Old Party of the past, we are the Great Opportunity Party of America’s future!”
This should be a bumper sticker. The full speech can be found here.
