In Minnesota, Wisconsin, Vermont and Connecticut, voters are heading to the primaries ahead of the Democratic National Convention, which begins next week.
Several Senate races are emerging in Wisconsin and Minnesota as Senators Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.) and Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) vie for another term in the upper chamber. Meanwhile, Representative Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), one of the last progressives facing a primary challenge this cycle, is preparing for a rematch against a challenger who nearly unseated her in 2022.
Here are five races to watch in Tuesday’s primary:
Omar is facing revenge
Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), one of the members of the progressive “squad,” faces a familiar rematch against Don Samuels, a former Minneapolis City Council member, and several other contenders. Although she was nearly unseated by Samuels last cycle when the two ran against each other, the progressive candidate from Minnesota appears to have a better chance of defeating Samuels this cycle.
In the last quarter of fundraising, between April and July, had raised $1.6 millionwhile Samuel’s had raised around $535,000.
Unlike last time, the political group American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) did not interfere in Omar’s primary this cycle. The Cook Political Report noticed that Omar also spent more on advertising than Samuels.
The seat went to President Biden by a wide margin in 2020, meaning Omar is considered the favorite to keep the seat if she wins her primary on Tuesday.
GOP crowns Hovde in Wisconsin
Republicans, including the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC), have agreed on businessman Eric Hovde as their candidate to run against Senator Tammy Baldwin (D-Wisconsin) in November.
Tuesday’s primary will be largely a formality, as Hovde faces only two outsiders. Former Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-Wis.) and Rep. Tom Tiffany (R-Wis.) were two prominent Republicans who ultimately dropped potential bids to run against Baldwin.
Polls so far show Baldwin is in a forceful position to beat Hovde in November. Total polls in Wisconsin According to Decision Desk HQ and The Hill, Baldwin is ahead of Hovde, 51 percent to 44 percent.
The nonpartisan election analyst Cook Political Report rates Baldwin’s seat as “leaning Democratic.”
Minnesota Republicans vote against Klobuchar
Eight Republicans are vying for the chance to run against Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) in November. The two most promising candidates are former NBA player Royce White and Navy veteran and businessman Joe Fraser.
While White enjoys the support of the state’s Republicans, Fraser has secured notable endorsements from established figures such as former Governor Tim Pawlenty (R), as well as former Minnesota GOP Senators Rudy Boschwitz and Norm Coleman. according to MPR News.
White’s allies include former Trump adviser Steve Bannon and conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, according to the Associated Press. The former NBA player has been criticized for controversial comments, including calling liberals “modern-day Nazis”; There was a connection between Luciferianism and the LGBTQ movement; and To describe women as “cheeky”.
He has also been scrutinized for the Use of the expression “Jewish elites” when talking about people who work at the Federal Reserve.
Tough competition in the Democratic primaries in the crucial race for the House of Representatives
Wisconsin State Representative Katrina Shankland (D-WI) and entrepreneur and nonprofit founder Rebecca Cooke are seeking the Democratic nomination in Wisconsin’s 3rd Congressional District this November to run against first-term Representative Derrick Van Orden (R-WI).
Cooke is backed by more moderate politicians and groups such as Democrat Jared Golden (Maine), the Blue Dog PAC and the New Democrat Coalition Action Fund. She is also supported by former Wisconsin Lieutenant Governor Barbara Lawton (D) and SEIU Wisconsin.
Shankland now enjoys the support of several Wisconsin elected officials, including Reps. Mark Pocan (D) and Gwen Moore (D), as well as progressive organizations and unions such as MoveOn, Wisconsin AFL-CIO and End Citizens United/Let America Vote.
Eric Wilson, who his campaign says has experience in real estate and health insurance, is also running for the seat.
The Cook Political Report rates the Wisconsin House of Representatives seat as “leaning Republican.”
Republicans want to limit Evers’ spending in Wisconsin
The state’s Republican lawmakers are seeking to limit Gov. Tony Evers’ ability to spend federal funds in the state by asking voters to vote on several ballot proposals on Tuesday.
Republican lawmakers plan to put two separate ballot bills before voters, both of which aim to limit the governor’s power to spend federal funds.
The AP noted that the voting measure comes in the wake of an ongoing dispute between the governor and Republicans over control of spending, which became especially evident after the COVID-19 pandemic, when the state received billions from the federal government.
Democrats are lobbying against the ballot measures and urging voters to reject both proposals. More than half of voters must vote for the measures for the constitutional amendments to take effect.
Evers could not have vetoed the ballot measures because they are constitutional amendments.
