In a letter released Thursday, former President Donald Trump’s legal team asked Judge Juan Merchan to delay Trump’s sentencing in the Manhattan trial. That sentencing is currently scheduled for September 18. Trump’s legal team claims, among other things, that such a brief verdict amounts to influencing the election.

In a Letter published on ThursdayA lawyer for the former president and current Republican candidate said that convicting Trump as planned on September 18 – about seven weeks before Election Day – would amount to election interference.
Trump’s lawyer Todd Blanche wrote that a delay would also give Trump time to consider his next steps after trial judge Juan M. Merchan is expected to rule on the defense’s motion on September 16. set aside the judgment and dismiss the action due to the decision of the US Supreme Court in July Presidential immunity decision.
“There is no reason to continue the rush,” Blanche wrote.
According to the current plan, the verdict would be announced 48 days before the election on November 5.
Trump was found guilty in May of falsifying business records to cover up a 2016 payment to a former porn actress. The former president insists the allegations are false and politically motivated.

District Attorney Alvin Bragg, who brought the charges, is a Democrat, as is Judge Juan Merchan, whose daughter works as a Democratic consultant.
Blanche sent the letter to Merchan on Wednesday after the judge rejected the defense’s recent request that he recuse himself from the case.
In the letter, Blanche repeated the defense’s argument that the judge had a conflict of interest because his daughter worked as a political consultant to the Democrats, including for Kamala Harris when she ran for the 2020 presidential nomination. Harris is now running against Trump.
By postponing sentencing until after that election, “the court would reduce, if not eliminate, questions about the integrity of future proceedings,” Blanche wrote.

Judge Merchan is expected to rule on the immunity request on September 16, two days before the scheduled sentencing.
