When news emerged that First Lady Jill Biden was grumbling about her husband being excluded from the Democratic presidential nomination, speculation arose about the nature of the speech she would give on the first night of the Democratic National Convention.
First Lady Jill Biden will have a “role” on the first day of the Democratic National Convention to honor and preserve the legacy of her husband, President Joe Biden, even as she expressed disappointment with those encouraging the president to drop out of the 2024 presidential race, a report said.
According to NBC NewsThe first lady will pay tribute to her husband in her speech and acknowledge his 50 years of service in public service.
Her public appearance at the event honoring the up-to-date Democratic Party candidates – Vice President Kamala Harris and Governor Tim Walz – is notable given allegations that the first lady had “privately expressed dismay at some Democrats” who did not publicly support President Biden’s re-election campaign, the news agency reported.
“She’s tough and will, of course, defend her family when necessary,” Elizabeth Alexander, the first lady’s communications director, told NBC News. “It’s always been that way and it always will be that way.”
The DNC prefaced her speech with a glossy video of Dr. Jill Biden and her photo ops/accomplishments. A crying teenage girl, overcome with emotion, introduced her to the audience via video. While Biden’s dress was not her usual fashion flop, the rhinestone outfit was more nightclub than DNC convention. She looked a bit overdressed for the occasion.
After the first night of the convention was already far too long and President Joe Biden was still to end the evening, Dr. Biden’s speech was thankfully tiny and basically reiterated his support for Kamala Harris as his successor in 2024.
Joe and I have been together for almost 50 years, and there are still moments when I fall in love with him all over again.
Nobody believes that, but it is a good speech text. Biden listed moments in which this renewed commitment to love took place. Then Biden rounded it off with:
Those moments when I’m reminded that he accomplished everything for something bigger than himself. When he placed his hand on our family Bible to take his oath of office. And weeks ago, when I saw him look deep within himself and decide not to run for re-election and support Kamala Harris.
Fortunately, she avoided referencing former President Donald Trump and instead quickly linked Joe’s deep commitment to sacrifice and country to Kamala Harris’ values.
Nobody believes that either.
Joe believes with faith and conviction that our nation’s strength does not come from intimidation or cruelty. Kamala Harris knows this too.
Biden further explained how they met Kamala Harris through their son Beau Biden and that he considered her “someone special.”
Joe and I know Kamala. We have seen her courage, determination, and leadership first hand. Kamala and Tim, you will win! And you will inspire a up-to-date generation. We are all part of something bigger than ourselves, and we are stronger than we think. The future of our country is in the hands of those in this room and everyone watching at home. We all have to step up, and we cannot afford to lose. We will fight and win together!
A fairly generic speech, without the charged emotions and seriousness that defined this moment. As the saying goes, Republicans fall in love, Democrats submit. This speech was Dr. Jill Biden in perfect formation.
