CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) – We’re starting to get a clearer picture of what a special session of the West Virginia Legislature might entail.
Gov. Jim Justice (R-WV) said we would have more details about the special session on Monday when he makes his official announcement.
The governor wants lawmakers to give West Virginia workers another 5 percent cut in their income taxes, and many in both parties are hoping for child care subsidies and tax breaks to ease the burden on working families.
“Child care is necessary so that people can work. So that people can work, because if they don’t have a place to put their children, they can’t get to work. So we have a tremendous need for child care in the state of West Virginia,” said Del. Kayla Young (D) of Kanawha.
“I told you this two months ago. I was going to propose a 5 percent tax cut. If we want to do more, just tell me how we can do it,” said Gov. Jim Justice (R) of West Virginia.
Some Republican politicians are concerned about how much another 5% tax cut would hurt state finances, so the governor is trying to negotiate an acceptable deal with them.
Currently, the state has enough money to support child care subsidies through the end of the year, and many are hoping the legislature and governor can extend that funding.
