Attorney General Merrick Garland delivered a speech to Justice Department officials and U.S. prosecutors on Thursday morning – a fiery Speech, according to CNN.

Attorney General Merrick Garland will sharply condemn efforts to turn the Justice Department into a “political weapon” in a fiery speech Thursday morning to department officials and U.S. prosecutors across the country, according to excerpts from his prepared remarks.

In his speech, which will focus on defending the Justice Department’s long-standing norms, Garland will denounce the “escalation of attacks” on department officials in recent years that have relied on “conspiracy theories, dangerous falsehoods, attempts to intimidate officials through repeated and public evocation, and threats of actual violence,” according to excerpts.

“It is dangerous to attack and intimidate individual employees of this department simply for doing their jobs,” he said from Justice Department headquarters in Washington. “And it is outrageous that you have to face these unfounded attacks for doing the right thing and upholding the rule of law.”

The full observations are reproduced in part in this DOJ report. Tweet threadbut this caught my eye:

“I have seen not only how you have acted in the face of threats such as violent crime and terrorism, but also how you have continued bravely in the face of an unprecedented augment in threats against a range of public officials across the country.

“These attacks have taken the form of conspiracy theories, dangerous falsehoods, attempts to intimidate and intimidate officials through repeated and public denigration, and threats of actual violence.”

CNN, of course, quickly made a connection between these comments and former President Donald Trump. notes:

The attorney general’s comments come after former President Donald Trump claimed the Justice Department was weaponized in his prosecution of him and suggested he would politicize the department if he returned to the Oval Office. Although neither the Republican nominee nor his allies are named in the excerpts, Trump and his aides have spoken publicly about plans to dissolve the department And its law enforcement components like the FBI, or prosecute be political enemies.

(No mention of the allegations by Hunter Biden or his legal team that the same Justice Department is seeking a “show trial” by charging the First Son with tax evasion and trying to “dehumanize” him. Funny.)

Here are some key moments from Garland’s remarks:

“Federal prosecutors and agents may NEVER make a decision regarding an investigation or prosecution for the purpose of influencing an election or providing an advantage or disadvantage to any candidate or political party!”

“We must treat like cases alike. There is not one rule for friends and another for enemies; one rule for the powerful and another for the powerless; one rule for the rich and another for the poor; one rule for Democrats and another for Republicans; or different rules according to race or ethnicity. On the contrary, we have only one rule: We follow the facts and apply the law in a way that respects the Constitution and protects civil liberties.”

“Our standards are a promise that we will not allow this nation to become a country where law enforcement is treated as a political apparatus.”

Watch AG Garland put his hand over his heart to thank everyone for the applause he receives.

I would be ecstatic if Garland’s comments would reassure me. I would be lying if I said so.
