The second assassination attempt on Donald Trump has generated a number of ridiculous headlines in recent days. RedState has covered many of them, including the disgusting rants from the Vindman family and Adam Kinzinger. The press has been no better: MSNBC featured numerous “analysts” blaming Trump for the people who tried to shoot him.

On Tuesday, CNN’s Scott Jennings, the infrequent voice of reason on the network, finally had enough. When the afternoon anchor tried to claim that “the rhetoric is on both sides,” he lashed out and tore her argument to pieces.

MODERATOR: But the rhetoric comes from both sides, it comes from the right, it comes from the left

JENNINGS: The rhetoric. They tried to kill this man twice. He was shot in the ear and this guy had set up outside a golf course this weekend to kill him. I know it’s very fashionable after something like this to talk about rhetoric on both sides.

Donald Trump is the target. He is the current target and it is happening and it is happening again and I’ll be forthright, we need to talk about elections. If you lose an election, the country doesn’t end, OK. What I honestly want from the Democrats is for them to say it’s OK. If Donald Trump wins, democracy will not end, the Constitution will not end, we will not live in a dictatorship, there will be no bloodbath. All the things they are saying are completely made up to me, it would be a good day to stop doing that.

Later in the clip above, but during a different exchange, Jennings then made a very astute observation about the current state of affairs.

JENNINGS: And I know everyone is talking today about all the rhetoric in this country and what can be done in the future to change that. It’s too slow. Folks, in my opinion, it’s too slow because all the rhetoric about Donald Trump over the last few years has been that he’s a threat to democracy, that the country would collapse if he were re-elected president. You know, even over the weekend, there were people blaming him and JD Vance for a bomb threat in Springfield.

If you believed that over the weekend, how can you not believe that the rhetoric leading up to today is not somehow responsible for this man somehow surviving two assassination attempts?

He’s right. It’s too slow to change any of that. We’ve seen nine years (and maybe even longer in some circles) of Donald Trump being compared to Adolf Hitler. They’ve claimed he’s going to establish a dictatorship and surround and imprison anyone who disagrees. They’ve shouted from the rooftops that Trump’s election would lead to the collapse of our republic. That’s not the kind of thing that can be indoctrinated in a few weeks. The Democrats did what they did, and the consequences will be felt for a long time to come.

Of course, what Jennings is saying is a pipe dream anyway. Democrats will never admit they’ve gone too far. Instead, they’ll keep caving in, basically saying, “Please stop trying to make us kill you.”

But as Jennings pointed out, it’s also about holding Democrats to their own standards. These are the same people who spent all weekend in Springfield whining about false bomb threats and insisting that Republicans were responsible. Yet someone is trying to cut off Donald Trump’s head. again isn’t caused by left-wing rhetoric? With that logic, the Democrats and their allies in the press can jump into a lake.
