Good morning and welcome to RedState’s Morning Minute – a quick look at what’s trending today and a look ahead to what the day may bring. Consider this your one-stop shop for news to start your day with.
BEST MORNING
WATCH: JD Vance Gives Master Class on Educating a New York Times Reporter on the Springfield Question
You might think that with trust in the media at an all-time low, you wouldn’t want to let these numbers drop any further. But TDS/VDS does strange things to people, and journalists are certainly no exception.
Hilarious: RFK Jr. remembers how Trump flew his family in on a private jet – even as he sued the former president
I don’t know, but RFK Jr. and Trump seem to have developed an unusual bond.
It wasn’t the pro-life laws that killed Amber Thurman, but the abortion industry
The callous disregard for life displayed by the abortion industry and its supporters in the Democratic Party is something all voters should keep in mind as they go to the polls on November 5.
WHAT IS ON OFFER?
Today on Capitol Hill…
There will be quite a lot going on on Capitol Hill on Wednesday as several hearings/sessions are scheduled, including:
- House Department of Homeland Security – “A Country Without Borders: How Biden-Harris’ Open Borders Policy Has Undermined Our Security”
- House Subcommittee on Judiciary, Crime, and Federal Oversight – Oversight of Homeland Security Investigations
- House Subcommittee on Financial Services, Digital Assets, Financial Technology, and Inclusion – Dazed and Confused: Analyzing the SEC’s Politicized Approach to Digital Assets
- House Education and Workforce Subcommittee, Worker Protection – “Investigating Biden and Harris’ Attacks on Tipped Workers”
- Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation – Hearings to Examine Cybersecurity Threats in Aviation
- House Subcommittee on Financial Services, National Security, Illicit Finance, and International Financial Institutions – Protecting Americans’ Savings: Examining the Economics of the Multi-Billion Dollar Romance Scam Industry [Wut?]
- House Committee on the Budget, Subcommittee on Health — Investing in a Healthier America: Preventing and Treating Chronic Disease
- Joint Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe (US-Helsinki Commission) – Hearings to examine Russia’s imperial identity
- Senate Intelligence (Select) – Hearings to examine foreign threats to 2024 elections, focusing on roles and responsibilities of U.S. technology providers
There will undoubtedly be plenty of news from the House of Representatives, as Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) Discounts the budget proposal (plus the SAVE Act) will be voted on Wednesday. This could get ugly. (And if it does, it will undoubtedly hurt Republicans politically – because that’s just how it works.)
Even if this does not happen, the Fed is expected to announce its interest rate decision on Wednesday.
White House, what’s going on
President Joe Biden has nothing planned for the day other than his Daily Brief. In the overdue afternoon/early evening, he will host a reception to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month.
The home stretch
Vice President Kamala Harris will speak at the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute’s 47th annual leadership conference on Wednesday afternoon, followed by a virtual campaign rally. Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff will attend campaign events in New York.
Former President Donald Trump will hold a rally in Uniondale, New York, on Wednesday night. His running mate, Ohio Senator JD Vance, will be in Raleigh, North Carolina, for a rally on Wednesday.
The Teamsters Board of Directors is also meet Wednesday to consider supporting Harris or Trump.
Full speed ahead…
Trump will not in the criminal trial in Manhattan today. Sentencing in that case, as readers may recall, was postponed until November.
Meanwhile, Hunter Biden has asked the Delaware federal court to postpone his sentencing in the gun trial from November 13 to later in November or December because of scheduling conflicts with the California tax trial and a civil case.
Sean “Diddy” Combs plans to appeal his denial of bail on Wednesday. (Combs was denied bail during his initial appearance before a justice of the peace on Tuesday afternoon because he was found to be a flight risk. He will have a bail hearing before U.S. District Judge Andrew Carter on Wednesday afternoon.)
Of utmost importance
It’s not a primary, but New Jersey is holding a special election on Wednesday to replace Rep. David Payne Jr., who died in April. This is a unthreatening D district, so Democrat LaMonica McIver is expected to take the win and serve out the remainder of Payne’s term.
MORNING THOUGHTS
Different franchise, but the following meme reminded me of a key scene from another space classic:
The election is 48 days away – less if you vote early. There’s a lot of stuff going to be thrown at us in the next seven weeks. If you think it’s been a wild ride so far, buckle up, my friends. Don’t get distracted, don’t get discouraged. Stay focused, stay the course. Vote.
LIGHTER FOOD
Logical.
