Good morning and welcome to RedState’s Morning Minute – a quick look at what stories are trending right now and a look ahead to what the day might bring. Consider this your one-stop shop for news to lend a hand you start your day.
UP IN THE MORNING
Kamala’s bizarre interview with Howard Stern goes ridiculously off the rails when she talks about “weakness.”
Harris is literally everything she complains about and that’s why we need to turn away from her.
Brian Trascher of the United Cajun Navy confirms that a Blackhawk “rotor flushed” a resource site in western North Carolina
On the evening of Sunday, October 6, a helicopter “washed down” a POD center where the United Cajun Navy was distributing supplies and providing assistance to those affected by Hurricane Helene.
Just in time for the election, Fox News is making an incredibly clever move
The boost in the number of Hispanics seeking conservative news sources like Fox News parallels the number of Hispanic voters seeking a home in the Republican Party.
WHAT’S UP?
Today on Capitol Hill…
Yesterday I raised the possibility of a U.S. Senate in which Chuck Schumer (D-NY) is no longer the majority leader. But if Republicans do take back the Senate, it won’t be with Mitch McConnell (R-KY) at the helm. It’s up to John Thune (SD), John Cornyn (TX) and Rick Scott (FL) vying to replace him. But her fellow Senator Mike Lee (UT) did proposed some reforms This might be worth considering in the post-McConnell era. Lee’s proposals aim to “limit the next Republican Senate leader’s ability to prevent rank-and-file conservative senators from voting on amendments to major bills.” Let’s hope we see what that looks like.
What’s going on in the White House?
At noon, President Joe Biden receives a briefing on hurricanes Milton and Helene – and surprise! Vice President Kamala Harris will be there. In the afternoon he will hold a call with rabbis to commemorate the Jewish High Holidays. He will then welcome HE Simon Harris, Taoiseach of Ireland. And then he will deliver remarks on Hurricane Milton.
The home stretch
As mentioned above, Harris will attend the lunch meeting between Milton and Helene. She then heads to Las Vegas, Nevada. Second (none) Gentleman Doug Emhoff will speak at a campaign rally in Atlanta on Wednesday evening. His candidate for Minnesota governor, Tim Walz, will campaign in Tucson, Arizona, while his wife, Minnesota First Lady Gwen Walz, will campaign in Beloit and Madison, Wisconsin.
Former President Donald Trump will give a speech in Scranton, Pennsylvania, on Wednesday afternoon, followed by an evening rally in Reading. His running mate, Ohio Sen. JD Vance, will also campaign in Tucson on Wednesday.
Full court press…
It is the third day of the Supreme Court’s term in 2024 when the justices will hear oral arguments in the case Glossip vs. Oklahomawhich is an appeal against the death penalty several problems:
(1) Whether the State’s suppression of the prosecution’s key witness’s admission that he was undergoing psychiatric treatment and the failure to correct that witness’s false testimony about that treatment and the associated diagnosis violated due process pursuant to violates the law Brady vs. Maryland And Napue vs. Illinois; (2) whether the totality of the suppressed evidence must be taken into account in assessing materiality Brady And Napue claims; (3) whether due process requires reversal when a death penalty is so infected with error that the state no longer attempts to defend it; and (4) whether the Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals’ decision that the Oklahoma Post-Conviction Procedure Act precludes post-conviction relief is an appropriate and independent state law basis for judgment.
Morning rumination
Discernment. Man, is that critical? As much as I roll my eyes at the sudden reluctance of those in power to address “misinformation” and “disinformation” and fight with all my might against censorship and the suppression of speech, scrolling through social media (especially X/Twitter) lend a hand It’s a frustrating endeavor to wade through and sort through a multitude of claims – some wilder than others. Use your noggin. Look for reliable sources. (Note: These are typically not the ones who start every other post with “BREAKING!1!” or who rarely, if ever, provide links to support their claims.) Beware of the engagement farmers. Do your own research to see if something is too good (or too bad) to be true. And pray for wisdom and discernment to separate the wheat from the chaff.
