According to initial forecasts, Le Pen is celebrating an overwhelming victory for her party in the French parliamentary elections

As polling stations began to close in the final hour for France’s parliamentary elections, it became clear that a sea change could still be happening. Numerous media outlets are reporting that early forecasts of the results of the snap election suggest voters are moving to the right and away from current President Emmanuel Macron’s Renaissance party, likely meaning a landslide victory for the right-wing Rassemblement Nationale in the first round of voting. The runoff will take place on July 7.

According to initial estimates by the Ipsos polling institute, the far-right Rassemblement National is expected to win 34 percent of the vote on Sunday, while the centrist coalition of French President Emmanuel Macron suffered huge losses and came in third with 20.3 percent of the vote. The left-wing coalition achieved a mighty result with 28.1 percent of the vote.

According to initial forecasts based on exit polls, Le Pen’s party is expected to receive 230 to 280 seats in the 577-seat National Assembly, the left-wing alliance 125 to 165 seats and Macron’s coalition 70 to 100.

Until the election results and negotiations between the three political groups are completed in the next few days, it is not known how many seats will be allocated to each group.

Macron is holding on with all his might and continues to urge his base to resist the animated of the Rassemblement National ahead of the runoff election in July:

On Sunday, the French president called on the “democratic and republican” forces to unite against Le Pen’s party. “In view of the [rise of the] “We must build a broad unity as the Rassemblement National before the second round, which is clearly democratic and republican,” Macron said, according to a statement from the Elysée Palace. “The high turnout … shows how important the vote was for our fellow citizens and how much they want to clarify the political situation.”

Meanwhile, Marine Le Pen, the leader of the Rassemblement National, is celebrating the news of her expected election victory at a party event:

“The French people have shown that they can draw a line under seven years [Macron’s] “despicable rule,” Le Pen said at a party rally in the eastern French town of Hénin-Beaumont. “We have not won yet, the second round will be decisive … we need an absolute majority so that Jordan Bardella can be appointed prime minister by Emmanuel Macron in eight days,” she added.

In the first round, the Rassemblement National came in first with 33%, followed by the left-wing New Popular Front with 29% and Macron’s Renaissance Party with 22%.
