Not long after the Supreme Court’s momentous ruling on presidential immunity on Monday – which sent liberals into a panic but made Republicans smile – Donald Trump’s lawyers filed a motion to overturn his 34 convictions in the white-collar fraud trial against Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg.
The move is coming just a few days before the verdict on 11 July:
In a letter to the judge overseeing the case, Trump’s lawyers asked for permission to file a motion to overturn the conviction, just hours after the Supreme Court issued its landmark ruling in another of Trump’s criminal cases. The letter will not be made public until Tuesday at the earliest, after which prosecutors will have a chance to respond.
On Monday, RedState’s Susie Moore explained the significance of the Supreme Court’s decision:
In a 6-3 VerdictThe court ruled that a former president enjoys absolute immunity for his core constitutional powers. In addition, former presidents are entitled to at least a presumption of immunity for their official acts. However, there is no immunity for unofficial acts.
Chief Justice John Roberts, writing for the court, laid out the decision that is likely to confuse those on both/all sides of the dispute, at least to some degree, by sending the case back to the lower courts to determine which of the actions in question are “official” or “unofficial.”
As we reported, the former president expressed his delight at the ruling, while the current occupant of the Oval Office – Mr. “Democracy” – continued to try to undermine the legitimacy of the highest court in the land.

Trump was energetic on Truth Social throughout the day and added Another contribution In the evening:
The Supreme Court decision is far more impactful than some expected. It is brilliantly and cleverly written and erases the stench of the Biden trials and hoaxes that were used as an unfair attack on conman Joe Biden’s political opponent, me. …

MANY OF THESE FALSE CASES WILL NOW DISAPPEAR OR BE LOST INTO OBSERVATION. GOD BLESS AMERICA!
Trump’s latest efforts raise many questions, but you can bet that Bragg and hopelessly biased Judge Juan Merchan will do everything in their power to ensure that the former president and presumptive Republican presidential nominee does not succeed in his endeavor.
…[Trump’s] His lawyers will likely argue that the prosecution built its case in part on evidence from his time in the White House. And under the up-to-date Supreme Court ruling, prosecutors not only cannot charge a president for official acts, but also cannot operate evidence related to official acts to support other charges.
It is unclear how the Manhattan district attorney’s office, which brought the case to trial, will respond or whether the judge will delay the first conviction of an American president. But Trump’s actions appeared to cause at least a brief pause: The district attorney’s office did not give the judge a sentencing recommendation on Monday on whether Trump should be sent to prison, as expected.
We’ve reported on how the immunity ruling negatively impacts special counsel Jack Smith’s cases against the president, making them unlikely to go to trial before the November election. Even though Bragg’s case is not a federal case, the ruling could have a positive impact on Trump there, too.
It was a good few days for the former president, but not so much for Biden.
