(The hill) – Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear (D) laid out a framework Tuesday for Democrats to regain the trust of the American people after election results gave Republicans control of the country White House, senate And House of Representatives.

“While I am deeply disappointed in the national outcome, I refuse to play the blame game,” Beshear wrote in an op-ed published in The New York Times. “Campaigns are hard. Candidates and their families have to go through hell. And all the candidates gave their best to win, even if they came up short.”

Beshear, who was not on the ballot in 2024, Democrats said you have to concentrate on “core issues” that are significant to people every day – such as jobs, housing and healthcare.

“Yes, our country faces many big and important issues, but when families in these core areas are struggling, it is difficult to focus on or accomplish anything else,” Beshear wrote. “If you’re staring at the cost of your child’s recipe and wondering how you’re going to pay for both it and your family’s dinner, that’s the passing of the day in Washington, DC, or the latest crazy thing a politician said , just not that significant.”

“So the path forward is not complicated, but it does require work and discipline,” he continued. “The Democratic Party must return its focus to creating better jobs, more affordable and accessible health care, safer roads and bridges, and the best education for our children and communities where people are not only safer, but feel safer .”

Once the governor of Kentucky floated as potential running mate For Vice President Harris, he offered his own re-election race as a roadmap, which he won last year by a 5-point margin in a state that supported President-elect Trump by a 30-point margin in the 2024 race.

He said he won because Kentuckians “know that I care about them personally” and that “I focus on what matters most in their daily lives.” Beshear added that he saw “actual results “I achieved things that changed people’s lives.

“The Democratic Party must show the American people that it cares about creating a better life for every single American and regain the public’s trust in its focus and direction,” he wrote in his essay.

Beshear said he was not urging Democrats to “abandon important values and principles.” He noted that he vetoed anti-abortion and anti-LGBTQ bills, “and yet last fall I beat Mr. Trump’s hand-picked nominee.” He said he did so because voters trusted his focus on improving their lives.

The Kentucky Democrat noted that it is also significant to speak “like normal people” and explain positions in a direct manner. When he vetoed anti-LGBTQ legislation, he told the public that his faith was the reason for his decision, “because I believe that all children are children of God.”

“And if people agree with my decision, they know why I’m making it,” the governor added. “You know where I come from.”
