Washington (AP) – President Donald Trump has repeatedly questioned the Republicans of the Senate with his cabinet prospects. But his appointment of Lori Chavez deremer for Labor Secretary proves to be the most hard for many.
Chavez deremer, a former MEP from Oregon, hardly shortens the profile of a classic Republican candidate. She is the daughter of a lifelong teamster. She is a miniature entrepreneur who acted mayor of a rapidly growing suburb in Liberal Portland, Oregon. And in the house she sponsored the legislation that was used by the American unions.
From this background, Trump, which some allies encouraged, nominated Chavez deremer to lead the Ministry of Labor. Their selection has messed up the usual partisan separations and attracted some democratic support, even if their union-friendly attitude leads to concern and in some cases a direct resistance of many Republicans.
But this advertisement is exactly the goal for Trump and the Allied Republicans, who put the party’s long -term antipathy aside towards unions and distract more voters from the Democratic Party.
“The party has changed,” said Senator Markwayne Mullin, R-Okla., A supporter of Trump’s cabinet candidate who speaks regularly to Chavez deremer.
“If you look at the new coalition of supporters that President Trump brought to the party, the work of one of them is … Lori is a perfect person to fit this gap,” he said.
However, this view is anything but unanimous in the GOP, with some Republicans of the Senate pronounced directly against their confirmation.
Senator Randa Paul, R-Ky., Who is in the Senate Committee to supervise the questions of work, criticized the previous support of Chavez deremer for the Pro law and said Union.
Nevertheless, Paul said that he believes that Chavez deremer was probably confirmed on an unusually cross-party basis.
“I think she will lose 15 Republicans and she will get 25 Democrats,” Paul told reporters. “But it is very pro-laboratory. She could get all the democrats who know. “
If this is confirmed, Chavez deremer will face growing challenges at the workplace at a time of the organizing Union. The range of the Ministry of Labor is enormous and covers examinations of work practices, debates on in office and long-distance work as well as concerns about automation when products for artificial intelligence occur throughout the economy.
Like other candidates of the Trump cabinet before her hearing, which is scheduled for Wednesday, Chavez deremer kept serene. But in the past she was blunt about her support for organized workers. As a house member, she often welcomed union members to sessions in her office and advertises her support with the union chapters of her district on the campaign path.
“In my district, unions are not the enemy of small companies, but a partner. Small companies benefit from the presence of unions. As a small business owner, I know that better than most others, ”said Chavez deremer in a re-election of 2024.
When she was sitting in the subcommittee of the house, which supervises work problems, Chavez deremer was often absent from hearings that her Republican colleagues held the Lambast unions.
“When I was asked to be in this committee, I let her know in advance Northwest Labor Press.
Union leaders took note of it.
Randi Weingarten, the President of the American Federation of Teachers, one of the largest unions in the country, supports Chavez deremer and said that she hopes Trump “gives her the authority that President Roosevelt gave Francis Perkins”, the continuous working secretary who -Secretary, who gives the secretary of the Labor Labor Secretary, that of the WHO-LABOUR-LABOUR secretary secretary has the modern deal.
“You already see the anti-laboratory people in the Republican Party who are trying to increase a case against them,” said Weingarten. “I found it important for those of us who believe in labor rights and authorization of the employees to get up and say that this was unconventional and a positive appointment.”
The nomination of Chavez-Demer also has the support of Sean O’Brien, the President of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters. He made waves before the elections last year by spoke at the Republican Congress before the team states refused to support Trump or Democrat Kamala Harris for the president.
O’Brien approached Mullin after the election and hovered the name of Chavez deremer and argued that she could be an olive branch for organized work, Mullin recalled. They then went together and gave Trump the idea.
The team would have been unimaginable in 2023 when O’Brien Mullin, as a “greedy CEO who pretends to be made” at a hearing that almost turned into a fist fight. But in the Interceding years they had built up a friendship with sports, fitness and the politics of work.
“We are a strange couple, I think,” said Mullin.
Trump’s public relations work on the voters from the once hard for trade union union communities was a driving force behind the modern union -friendly approach. Others in the party have worked towards the same goal. Conservative academics and political helpers have been organizing themselves behind the scenes for years to change the thinking of the GOP about the economy.
“At a high level, the change was a shift from the decommissioning to an effect perspective,” said Abigail Ball, Executive Director at American Compass, a conservative think tank. Ball said that the “failure of globalization” has pushed many conservatives into a modern approach.
“I think the American people realized that trade and cheap television have the loss of strong communities and the ability of a man who did not go to college to support his family with an income,” said Ball .
Republican senators are largely receptive to the appointment of Chavez deremer. However, some have noticed how unconventional choice is the choice for a Republican president.
“She voted for the Pro act. I don’t like that. But I like her. I think it will be good, ”said Senator Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala.
“My attitude is that the president won the election and he is entitled to his team absent,” said Senator John Cornyn, R-Texas. “Perhaps she is not someone I would have chosen, but that is not the question for me.”
Some Republican senators with a more populist Hope Hope Chavez deremer nomination serve as allusion to the changing basis of the party, which includes more voters in the working class in traditionally trade union and manufacturing jobs.
“I think she understands the need to have strong unions, to have a strong working voice and protect work,” said Senator Josh Hawley, R-Mo.
“We need more American jobs with better wages. We need more good union jobs, ”said Hawley. “I think she understands that.”
