CBS News host brags about Biden deportations vs. Trump; Tom Homan calls it a “numbers game”

CBS News’ Margaret Brennan (or her producers at “Face The Nation”) appear to have hatched a game plan before sitting down with several Republican guests on Sunday, including modern Trump border czar Tom Homan.

But it failed miserably. However, let’s take another look before we get to that.

Homan has more than held his own since President-elect Trump announced his nomination after the election, speaking in clear and matter-of-fact language about what the administration is doing to address the border crisis and the millions of illegal immigrants scattered across the country during Biden’s campaign wanted to undertake a disastrous four years in the White House.

In an interview with NewsMax just before New Year’s Day, Homan easily dismissed Democratic Rep. Jasmine Crockett’s verbal attack on his credibility, which she dismissed during a cozy interview on an MSNBC show.

During this week’s “Face The Nation” broadcast, Brennan’s questioning strategy appeared to discredit the modern president’s promise to carry out mass deportations and restore the integrity of the southern border. Here was an attempt to achieve that goal during Homan’s interview: [emphasis mine]

Homan directed the conversation at the Biden administration, which took action earlier this year to limit the number of asylum seekers entering the country through the U.S.-Mexico border. Homan argued that 80 percent of the Biden administration’s deportation numbers are due to border patrol arrests who were relocated back across the southern border.

“These were not internal arrests,” he said, adding The Biden administration is “playing a numbers game.”

Brennan’s answer was: Biden had more deportations than during Trump’s first term. Homan pointed out why the manipulated numbers don’t reflect what Trump managed to do:

You can compare the number of deportations under Trump with those under Biden. Considering crosses are at a 45-year low, the number of deportations [is] will be lower because we don’t have that population to process and deport.

In other words, Brennan’s tough question about whether Donald Trump will actually deport the number of people he promised inadvertently gave Homan an opportunity to learn about Biden’s catastrophic failure at the border. As he masterfully said in a way that even a child could understand, Trump’s numbers are of course lower – he didn’t allow the millions that Biden and DHS Secretary Mayorkas have. He also reminded the host that ICE could do its great work much more efficiently if sanctuary cities worked with them.

Brennan also expressed concern about Trump’s ability to deport violent criminals back to their home countries if their leaders refuse to take them in:

Homan quickly dismissed that question, saying Trump has been there, done that — and he has already persuaded some reluctant foreign leaders to back off their opposition in recent weeks.

As we previously wrote, modern Senate Majority Leader John Thune of North Dakota spoke to the host about the prospects of Trump Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth being confirmed by the U.S. Senate.

In a separate part of the interview, Brennan again tried to trip up a Republican with some outlandish remarks about Trump and immigration – and fell on her face.

This brief excerpt reveals what happened:

KRISTEN WELKER: When I spoke with President-elect Donald Trump, he said his mass deportation plan was his top priority. He wants to deport everyone who is staying here illegally. Do you support the plan to deport everyone who is here illegally?

SEN. JOHN THUNE: Well, I think there are certain – certainly there are categories, people who have committed crimes. There are over a million people targeted for deportation by the current administration. That’s why I think we need to take seriously the fact that there are many people in this country today, over 10 million, who have come under the policies of this Government in the last four years alone, many of whom are not here for good reasons . I mean, we know that we have arrested almost 300 people at the southern border who are on the terrorist watch list. And there are criminals, cartel members, gang members, and all of the above.

Absolutely right, and this is how the GOP needs to deal with far-left puns in the media. If the Republican Senate leadership, House Speaker Mike Johnson, and those Trump wants to surround himself with in the White House continue to sing from the same hymn book – especially in the tough battles ahead – the country may have a chance tattered border to remain our national sovereignty.
